Spain’s online gaming sector experienced a landmark year in 2024, with gross gaming revenue (GGR) rising to €1.45 billion ($1.58 billion), marking a 17.61% increase compared to the previous year. According to the latest State Online Gaming Market report, the market hit all-time highs in multiple categories, signaling robust consumer engagement and substantial operator investment across regulated platforms.
Casino and Betting Lead the Market Surge
Online casinos continued to represent the largest share of Spain’s regulated iGaming market. The casino segment recorded €730.7 million in GGR, up 17% year-on-year. Slot games proved the most lucrative within this segment, generating €472.2 million, an increase of 22.8%. Live roulette followed with €208.8 million in revenue, while standard roulette added another €24.9 million.
Sports betting also saw strong momentum, climbing 23.8% annually to reach €608.9 million in GGR. Live betting made up the largest portion with €285.1 million, closely followed by pre-match betting at €284.7 million. Other betting formats contributed €32.3 million.
Combined, these figures reflect the growing volume of gambling activity in Spain. Deposits jumped by 19.6% to €4.58 billion, while withdrawals rose nearly in parallel by 19.7% to €3.15 billion.
Poker Sees a Dip While Bingo Gains Ground
While most major segments expanded, poker posted a downturn in 2024, with revenue falling by 4.99% to €100.1 million. Tournament poker, which comprises the majority of the poker segment (73.58%), dropped by 3.48%, while cash poker fell even further, down 8.97%.
In contrast, bingo posted modest but positive gains. The segment brought in €14.9 million—an increase of 3.96%—continuing its slow but steady upward trajectory. Contest-based gaming declined sharply, registering just €7,057 in revenue, a dramatic 98.5% drop year-over-year.
Surge in Marketing Drives Higher User Engagement
Marketing expenditures surged to €526.3 million in 2024, a 30.4% jump from the previous year. Bonuses accounted for the largest share at €261.5 million, up 30.8%. The spike followed the partial reversal of advertising bans in April, which reintroduced welcome bonuses and expanded promotional options.
Other marketing categories also grew significantly. Advertising spend rose by 37.17%, promotions climbed by 30.84%, and affiliate marketing totaled €56.32 million. Sponsorships also saw increased investment.
The effects of these campaigns were evident in player activity. The number of active players reached 1,992,889—a 21.71% increase. Total active accounts rose 26% to 3.8 million. Monthly averages also grew: active accounts increased by 23.5% to 1.4 million, and new account registrations surged 34.7%, with monthly figures averaging 151,898.
Market Outlook
Spain’s online gambling industry in 2024 demonstrated widespread expansion, with notable growth in key verticals such as slots and sports betting. The resurgence in marketing efforts and user acquisition, especially after regulatory adjustments, significantly boosted engagement. However, the decline in poker highlights an area that may require renewed focus from operators aiming to maintain balance across their gaming portfolios.
