A historic billion-dollar investment in Reno, Nevada is expected to bring a unique form of entertainment for guests and sports fans of the city. Earlier this week, the Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) announced a $1 billion private capital investment, the largest in the history of the city. GSR’s billion-dollar plan seeks to revamp the existing 140-acre property, introducing new amenities.

The project, envisioned over the next decade, is expected to bring a new home for the University of Nevada Men’s Basketball team. The visionary project plans to introduce a new cutting-edge arena that will serve as the home of the Wolf Pack, offering 10,000 seats. In addition to being the home of the Men’s Basketball team, the arena is expected to be used for other sports events and even concerts.

The new arena is expected to take approximately 300K square feet and offer amenities, including shopping outlets for Wolf Pack fans, as well as parking spaces. Additionally, sports fans would be able to benefit from a variety of beverage and food outlets and even enjoy games from exclusive suites. The new arena at GSR is planned to open in the fall of 2026. Subject to Board of Regents approval, Nevada Men’s Basketball is expected to play for either the 2026-27 season or the 2027-28 season.

An Ambitious Plan to Transform Grand Sierra Resort

Alex Meruelo, GSR’s owner, commented: “The vision is to transform GSR into a destination where community, sports and entertainment come together.” Steve Alford, Nevada Men’s Basketball’s head coach, added that the ambitious project represents a game-changer for the team. “I greatly appreciate Alex’s bold vision and incredible support. This will be a state-of-the-art facility and I cannot be more excited for the future of Wolf Pack Basketball,” he explained.

“We are beyond thrilled for this proposed plan which will help continue to elevate our basketball programs.“

Stephanie Rempe, Nevada’s director of Athletics was similarly delighted about GSR’s ambitious plans. She predicted that this important project would provide a vital boost for the Athletics basketball programs. Rempe praised the bold vision of the new state-of-the-art arena that would be the home of Nevada Men’s Basketball.

At the same time, she spoke about the benefits the new arena would bring when it comes to hosting events with Nevada Women’s Basketball. Last but not least, Rempe said that the collaboration would help “solidify Nevada Athletics as a cornerstone of the Northern Nevada community.”

A lucky visitor from Fort Worth, Texas, secured a $13,100 jackpot via the Dragon Link slot game on July 7, 2023. This marked a milestone moment as it surpassed the $1 billion-dollar mark for jackpots paid by the venue, marking a third year in a row for this particular achievement.

As more jackpots drop at Seminole Hard Rock, the venue is getting closer to having 323,000 jackpots for 2023 so far. Given the jackpots that dropped this year and the ones from 2022 and 2021, more than $4 billion were awarded so far and that amount is only going to grow further by the end of the year. Yet, it remains to be seen if the venue would be able to surpass $2 billion in jackpots for this year.

Jackpots Continue to Drop at Seminole Hard Rock

Bo Guidry, Seminole Hard Rock’s president, explained that the continuously dropping jackpots reaffirm the venues’ commitment to delivering supreme experiences. “We pride ourselves on providing guests an experience unlike any other right here in sunny South Florida,” he said.

“Awarding more than $1 billion in jackpots three years in a row showcases that we are all about the guest experience first and foremost.“

Late in June, one lucky visitor of Seminole Hard Rock secured a significant jackpot while playing on Aristocrat Gaming’s Dragon Link slot machine. The lucky man from Marco Island, Florida, hit a $1,042,996.95 jackpot from the Dragon Link slot game after placing a $50 wager. The win came after earlier last month, another lucky visitor from Naples, Florida was able to hit a $1.2 million jackpot with a $25 bet.

Genting Berhad, the Malaysian gambling and hospitality conglomerate, has announced it has received up to five bids – each with asking price of $1 billion and more – for its prime waterfront property in Miami. This could be the highest price ever paid for any development property in the United States. 

Genting put up its 16.5-acre property situated along Biscayne Bay, Miami, in November 2022 and has since received multiple offers for it with the bidders ranging from international and domestic parties. The company purchased the property in 2011 for $236 million in hopes of securing a gaming license in Florida, but it could not. 

The company’s failure was purportedly due to the hold of the Seminole Tribe on gambling in Florida preventing other players from entering the market. Genting had plans to build a Resorts World Miami casino complex that would feature four-hotel tower complex with 5,200 rooms and a 3.6-acre lagoon.

With its efforts to acquire a gaming license proving futile, the property remained undeveloped and was the site for the Arts Miami and Context fairs. This was till it announced it had put up the property for sale. 

Many bids were sent in for the property and none of the bids were less than $1 billion. Michael Fay – an executive at Avison Young Miami, the which has the listing – told Bloomberg in an interview: “If we get what we hope to achieve, this could be the highest price paid for any development site in the country.” 

Reports say the company will direct the gains from the property sale towards securing a prized casino license in New York through its U.S. subsidiary. Genting is one of the many operators racing for one of the three available downstate gaming licenses in New York.

The company could also use the profit to fund its Asian operations and maybe try its hand again at breaking into the Macau market after it failed last year. Also, its Resorts World Catskills and Resorts World Las Vegas properties could benefit from the proceeds of the sale.
