Edgewater Casino Resort in Nevada unveiled a new two-day bingo event set to take place in November. The $200,000 River Bingo Bash will, according to the property, take bingoing to the next level.

The two-day event will begin on Saturday, November 23 and will conclude on Sunday, November 24. It will offer players a shot at a prize pool of $100,000 on each of the two days, while also providing guests with a weekend filled with food, gifts and entertainment.

The event is set to take place at the famed Edge Pavilion at Edgewater. Each of the two days will begin with ten warm-up games where winners will get $500. Following the warm-up, players will compete for what Edgewater described as “massive payouts” in the main event.

After the final session, Edgewater will host an afterparty event at the Edgewater Bingo Room. There, players will get chances to win free bingo and slot play, coverall prize games, cash balls and bingo buy-in fees.

Many Benefits Await

Bingo players who are up to some fun will have to pay a fee of $200 + taxes to enter the River Bingo Bash. This fee will ensure that players receive a 6-on pack and a hot dog and soda combo on each day of the event. On April 7, a woman in Jersey City, NJ won $200,000 at a Jin Ji Bao Xi Endless Treasure slot on the Tipico Casino platform online.

The latest company to have been handed down a fine is Casino Cosmopol which admitted fault and agreed to pay SEK2 million, or $200,000, to the regulator. This penalty is awarded in relation to anti-money laundering (AML) breaches outlined in the watchdog’s conclusion of the case and the two-year investigation.

Cited Breaches Are a Matter of the Past

Spelinspektionen says that certain elements of Casino Cosmopol’s AML processes were insufficient, and the operator had “failed” customer knowledge.  The regulator specifically looked into AML practices, citing previous concerns about compliance with the Money Laundering Act.

Casino Cosmopol, although acquiescing to the latest enforcement action, said that the issues described by the regulator were now an issue of the past and not something that Casino Cosmopol had overlooked to rectify.

The regulator has reflected on the positive changes that the operator had enacted as a result of the intervention and said that it expects Casino Cosmopol to indeed comply with all regulatory criteria moving forward.

Among those are improved money laundering training for staff which should help ensure that team members are fully prepared to meet the highest regulatory standards in the country. Apart from training, the operator uses different tools that help detect and flag suspicious transactions, enabling the company to respond in a timely and firm manner.

Gambling Regulator Is Tough on Financial Crime

Spelinspektionen has been calling for stricter measures when it comes to financial crime in the gambling industry and recently applauded a proposal pitched by the government and designed to, among other things, address AML deficiencies. Interestingly, though, the regulator does not believe that a credit card ban is needed in the country right now.

The proposal, however, also wants to increase the tax collected from gambling businesses to 22% from the current 18%, which has ruffled industry feathers and issued a response from BOS, a trade group that protects the industry’s interests and liaises with the government on various matters, including player protection and regulatory course-correction.

The Swedish Gambling Authority has not spared any effort in going after companies that it thinks are also coloring around regulatory lines. Recently, the watchdog named Videoslots as one of the operators to have breached the country’s CFT and AML mandates and rules.

The amount of the penalty was considerably larger at the time, with the company handed down a $810,000 fine.

The current growth plan for tourism in Holyoke seeks to boost visitation to the city for certain events.

Per the plan, a shuttle will help transport MGM Springfield casino visitors to the city, allowing them to enjoy different annual events. This, in turn, is expected to have a positive effect on the overall visitation of Holyoke and see local businesses grow further.

To engage with its plan, the city secured a $200,000 grant from the Massachusetts Gaming Mitigation Fund. Securing the grant was contingent on acceptance from the City Council. Greenlight about the state grant came Tuesday, allowing the city to progress with its ambitious tourism and economic stimulus plan.

The Grant Is Expected to Have Long-Term Impact

Aaron Vega, the director of Holyoke’s Office of Planning and Economic Development, acknowledged the importance of the new $200,000 grant for the city. He explained: “We’re going to capitalize on the fact that more people are coming to Western Massachusetts due to the casino.” Moreover, he pointed to the city’s potential in offering a wide variety of food options saying: “One of our big focuses is cultural diversity, especially when it comes to our restaurants.”

According to Vega, the funding won’t benefit only short-term initiatives but play a key role in long-term processes. Ultimately, the city’s plan will seek to make it more appealing, attracting tourism and investment as well. He spoke about the different areas that will benefit from the funding saying that the city’s website, Explore Holyoke, will benefit.

Additionally, Vega noted that the grant will fuel different historic tourism initiatives, that are expected to attract new visitors and guests. Different art projects would also receive a boost from the latest grant from the Massachusetts Gaming Mitigation Fund.

Class-action Lawsuit Against Eureka Casino

According to the data breach notification on the Maine Attorney General’s website 229,299 people were affected by the breach. This includes information belonging to employees, as well as customers. The personally identifiable information (PII) contained names, social security numbers, and financial information, including account/card numbers and security codes, according to the document.

The incident took place in November 2022, and Rancho Mesquite Casino (DBA Eureka Casino) notified the people affected. According to an 8NN report, it affected two of the company’s locations. Eureka operates hotels and casinos in Mesquite and Las Vegas, Nevada, and Seabrook, New Hampshire. The Maine AG office’s website didn’t explicitly specify which locations were breached.

According to the 8NN report, the letter sent to notify those whose PII was accessed by the hackers explained that the company took steps immediately to secure its systems. However, the attack took place in November 2022, and notifications were sent out in December 2022. This led to the company receiving further scrutiny over the delay in this instance.

The originating plaintiff in the class-action lawsuit is reportedly a California resident, who is claiming to be a victim of a ransomware attack, resulting from the security breach at Eureka Casino. The lawsuit was filed in a Las Vegas court, and the company was accused of negligence and failure to encrypt the sensitive information it was storing in its systems.

Cybersecurity Becoming a Prominent Topic

Data breaches are not a new occurrence and cybercriminals have noticed the world is moving increasingly toward digitizing everything. There is no shortage of targets and the gambling industry participants aren’t an exception to this. BetMGM was another example of this in late December of last year when it also suffered a cyber-attack.

The company confirmed it had launched an investigation at the tail end of December 2022. It acknowledged that patron data was impacted by the security incident. Again, social security numbers, dates of birth, and other details were accessed by the hackers. It’s standard practice for companies to collaborate with security companies in such cases.

There are also those trying to get ahead of the curve and the increasing number of industry participants collaborating with cyber-security experts and organizations is proof of that. Napoleon Sports & Casino joining the newly-established cybersecurity group of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) EGBA is one such example.

As companies learn to use and store an increasing amount of data to provide better experiences and more refined products, the need for enhancing cybersecurity also increases.
