arizona_department_of_gaming_releases_december_sports_betting_figuresThe Arizona Department of Gaming, the organization in charge of regulating the sports betting and gambling industry in the American state, has announced that December 2023 has brought record-breaking sports betting revenue.

The gross revenue for the sports betting industry in Arizona amounted to 66.1 million dollars in December 2023, a figure which represents an increase of 22.1 percent over the 54.4 million that were generated in the same month of 2022. Moreover, the revenue recorded in December 2023 was up 62.4 percent compared to the amount generated in November 2023.

The vast majority of that sum came from online sports betting, 65.2 million dollars, while retail sportsbooks attracted just 625,986 dollars in revenue during the month of December 2023. Limited event wagering operators managed to generate revenue of 240,604 dollars during the month.

Slight Decrease in Total Wagers

Despite the increased revenue, the total betting handle recorded a decrease compared to November 2023, when a new record was set by the Arizona sports betting industry. The total wagers in December 2023 amounted to 693.3 million dollars, over 20 million dollars behind the record set in November 2023, but still 21.1 percent higher compared to December 2022.

The online part of the business was again responsible for most of the action, attracting bets worth 685.1 million dollars in total, while retail sportsbooks got 6.4 million and limited event wagering operators just 1.8 million dollars. The month of December also recorded a total of 17.8 million dollars in free bets and promotional credits awarded to players in Arizona, with almost the entire amount coming from online sports betting operators.

This led to an adjusted gross sports betting revenue for December 2023 of 48.3 million dollars, another record for the Arizona sports betting industry. That figure is 30.3 higher than what was recorded in December 2022 and a whopping 139.4 percent higher than November 2023.

When it comes to tax, the Arizona sports betting industry contributed 4.8 million dollars in December 2023: 4.7 million dollars from online operators, 49,703 dollars from retail sportsbooks and 19,248 dollars from limited event wagering operators.

FanDuel Leading the Race

The most successful online sports betting operator in the state remains FanDuel, which posted adjusted revenue of 23.7 million dollars in December 2023 and total wagers amounting to 236.3 million dollars.

That is quite far ahead DraftKings and Crown Gaming in second place, which generated 13.8 million dollars in adjusted revenue and 228.5 million in total wagers. BetMGM ranked third in December 2023 with adjusted revenue of 6.1 million dollars and a total handle of 82.7 million dollars.

The retail side of the business features just two operators in Arizona, DraftKings and Crown Gaming took top spot with 361,037 dollars in adjusted revenue while FanDuel recorded adjusted revenue of 260,248 dollars.

Arizona Cardinals Hoping That Last Week’s Win Wasn’t a Glitch

The Arizona Cardinals are one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2023. At least that’s the case at this particular moment. The thing is that the Cards’ best player – their quarterback Kyler Murray – is injured and will remain sidelined for (at least) another couple of weeks.

The team from the Grand Canyon State does have some decent receivers on the rosters (e.g., Marquise Brown) but they probably won’t do much until Murray returns. In the meantime, their strongest offensive weapon is going to be their running game.

Arizona’s running backs did great against the Dallas Cowboys last weekend in Arizona. The Cards won the game 28-16, with Rondale Moore and James Conner each scoring one rushing TD. Their third TD was the work of Marquise Brown on a throw from QB Joshua Dobbs.

What’s even more impressive is that Arizona’s defense managed to keep Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense to just 16 points. Can they do something similar on their trip to San Francisco on Saturday?

The 49ers Determined to Go 4-0

There are just three teams that have all wins in the 2023 NFL, and one of those is San Francisco. The 49ers have been brilliant so far both offensively and defensively. They’re averaging 30.00 points per game while conceding just 14.00 on average. This means that both their offense and their defense rank first in the National Football Conference (NFC).

With players like Nick Bosa and Kyle Juszczyk on their defensive team, the Niners have nothing to worry about defending against the Cards. Their offense too should be able to run riot on the team from Arizona. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been pretty decent thus far, but it’s their running back Christian McCaffrey who’s been the most impressive. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel has also been great, both when it comes to receptions and rushing.

Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers Prediction

San Francisco’s fans have started dreaming about the Super Bowl and the 49ers will do all they can to keep that dream alive. They’re going to demolish the Cardinals on Sunday, possibly scoring way more than their 2023 average. Their defense should do a fine job as well, meaning that the hosts are almost certain to cover the spread in Week 4.

Picks: San Francisco 49rs to win and cover the spread

The Arizona Department of Gaming will award Fubo’s former license to bet365, just as earlier rumors claimed. As a result, the international gaming giant will foray into the Grand Canyon State, expanding its presence in the United States.

For reference, Fubo Sportsbook, the former partner of the Ak-Chin Indian Community, ceased its operations in Arizona following its parent company’s shutdown of the brand. The closure followed Fubo’s strategic review of the division that determined none of the potential investors would have given the brand the freedom it needed.

In the aftermath, the Ak-Chin Indian Community was left without a partner, freeing up the space for bet365’s arrival. Earlier reports correctly suggested that the former Fubo license would be handed to either bet365 or Fanatics.

Bet365 will now have to make its launch in Arizona within 180 days of the day it was approved for a license (August 29).

Arizona had two more available sports betting licenses but failed to find suitable companies within the application period.

Bet365 Continues to Grow in the US

Bet365 is currently live in five US states, namely Colorado, Iowa, New Jersey, Ohio and Virginia. The international operator is also set to launch in Kentucky with Sandy’s Racing & Gaming, a joint venture between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Revolutionary Racing Kentucky.

Earlier this year, bet365 gave up on pursuing an online license in Massachusetts. Initially, the company had unveiled a partnership agreement with Raynham Park, hoping to capitalize on opportunities in the state. However, the operator eventually discarded these plans.

The Operator Is Going from Strength to Strength

In other news, bet365 recently bolstered its content offering in the Canadian province of Ontario thanks to a partnership agreement with Bragg Gaming. As per the deal, Bragg agreed to provide the operator’s Canadian operations with games from its Atomic Slot Lab and Indigo Magic studios.

Speaking of new content, bet365 just joined forces with NoLimit City to roll out a new exclusive slot called Apocalypse Riders X. The game features three of the developer’s exclusive mechanics, namely xWays, xNudge and xSplit, as well as a brand-new mechanic called xBomb.

Earlier this month, bet365 also unveiled a new marketing campaign under the slogan “Never Ordinary.” The advert celebrates contemporary sports and was released ahead of the Premier League match between Burnley and Manchester City.

Moving forward, three new licenses will be accepted with the state looking to strengthen the number of license holders, tax revenue, and overall benefit from regulating the sports gambling industry.

Arizona Gears Up for More Sports Betting Licenses

The Arizona Department of Gaming will be accepting one application from Arizona tribes and two applications from professional sports teams, with the regulator moving cautiously about expansion and trying to balance out as it goes along.

A webinar informing potential applicants of what to expect will be hosted on July 17, with an application deadline set for August 15.

Applicants will have to go through regulatory scrutiny with only the best ones – providing the field of contestants is greater than the available licenses – shortlisted and selected to proceed with the launch of dedicated sports gambling operations.

Arizona is already doing very well when it comes to the number of sports betting operators allowed. There are a total of 17 online betting sportsbooks as of the present moment. This competitive field of contestants is unlikely to dissuade other parties from joining, however, as the state’s sports betting handle has been steadily climbing – not considering the months after the biggest events and sports seasons in the country.

Even with somewhat diminished returns due to the lack of big events in the United States, however, Arizona’s sportsbooks have been doing well, and have been able to retain a bigger share of the total betting handle punters have been placing with them.

Fees to Enter the Market Aren’t as Steep

To apply, gaming companies and anyone seeking to gain a license would first need to pay $100,000 and then be prepared to pay $750,000, providing they are approved. The licensing fees despite not being too low are not prohibitively expensive which is what makes the regulator believe there is going to be interest, especially from professional sports teams.

Exact applicants have not been floated just yet but there are many companies that are absent from the market as of right now. Some of those include Betr, Tipico, Bet365, Fanatics, and more. Fanatics has been moving fast across the United States recently, making waves through the contested acquisition of PointsBet US.
