A few days after securing an online betting license in Illinois, global gambling leader Betway has expanded its global tennis portfolio with the addition of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers. The addition of the Toronto event comes a day before its start.

This year’s iteration of the National Bank Open will take place in Toronto between August 5 and 13. It is a part of the ATP Masters 1000. The tennis competition will be hosted at the Sobeys Stadium with the finals set to take place at the 10,800 capacity Centre Court.

In addition, Betway has secured a multi-year deal that will see its logo promoted across the Sobeys Stadium. The operator’s logo will be visible on the backwall throughout all days of the tournament.

The gambling brand added that the upcoming tournament will be the first game in Toronto for the newly crowned Wimbledon champion and World Number 1 Carlos Alcaraz. The tennis star will play his opening match during the night session on August 9, Betway added.

The globally-recognized online gaming and betting brand, Betway, continues to grow its presence in the United States. Currently, the company has a presence in eight different states, offering sports betting. Strategic jurisdictions where Betway offers online gambling, in addition to sports betting, are Pennsylvania and New Jersey, two markets with significant potential. Continuing its expansion, the company has now secured an online sports betting license for the regulated market in Illinois.

The latest announcement comes after the gambling regulator in the state, the Illinois Gaming Board, said Thursday that it selected Betway as the recipient of an online-only sports betting license. The betting and gaming company was one out of two that submitted an application for a license. Ultimately, securing the license enables Betway to provide online sports betting in Illinois. As an online-only sports betting license, the company won’t be permitted to receive in-person bets. At the same time, Betway won’t be required to sign a partnership with a retail partner in Illinois.

The state legalized sports wagering in June 2019. Then, in March 2020 it launched legal retail betting, followed by a mobile betting market launch in June of the same year.

Given that Betway holds an online-only license, the company will be subject to a higher license fee. Land-based sports betting operators pay a $10 million license fee, while online betting companies are subject to a $20 million license fee. Both online and retail betting companies are also subject to a $1 million renewal fee applicable every four years.

The Betting Company Joins a Competitive Market

The latest license, making Betway the newest addition to the regulated betting market in Illinois, doesn’t come as a surprise. This is because back in 2021, the company pursued options for entering the betting market in the state. However, in an unexpected turn of events at the time, Betway decided to back off from the process.

Now, a couple of years later, the company joined a handful of operators that have already established their presence in Illinois. Not unexpectedly, giants like FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars and BetMGM, among others, have already established their presence within the Illinois online sports betting market.

Elsewhere, in Europe, Betway confirmed a new content partnership with Greentube, the NOVOMATIC Digital Gaming and Entertainment division, for the market in Belgium. Global leaders in sports betting have joined forces to establish a new entity in Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR), seeking to contribute to the ongoing discussion and development of the gambling market in the Latin American country.

‘Collaborate with All Sectors of Society’

The establishment of the new body focused on responsible gaming comes ahead of the upcoming regulation of the sports betting market which is technically called “fixed odds betting” in Brazil. The Federal Government is expected to introduce a new regulatory framework based on law 13.756/18.

Elected president of IBJR, André Gelfi, outlined the new body’s mission “to collaborate with all sectors of society that want to learn more about the industry and understand how it can be harmoniously integrated into the Brazilian economy, as it has in other countries.”

Gelfi then noted that IBJR members have seen successful and not-so-successful regulatory regimes and accumulated enough expertise in the field to help the government define the rules for the national market.

With bet365, Flutter Entertainment, Betsson Group, Betway Group, Yolo Group, Netbet Group, KTO Group, and Rei do Pitaco as founding members, the newly-established IBJR has representation from operators active in more than 100 countries.

Sensitive Aspects Require Responsible Treatment

Speaking about markets with successful regulation, Gelfi added that in these countries, “sports betting is seen as a source of entertainment that helps preserve the integrity [of the] sport,” adamant that “the sector’s sensitive aspects, such as compulsive gambling and money laundering,” should be addressed “in a forceful, logical and responsible manner.”

And while the country’s continental dimensions are considered a challenge for regulation, the IBJR believes the size of Brazil should not be viewed as a constraint and is eager to provide a meaningful contribution to the technical aspects of regulation based on the comprehensive experience and global expertise of its members.

“No other country has enjoyed such a favorable environment for the construction of a successful regulation that can be an example for the world,” Gelfi continued, urging the government to use “aspects of countries that have successfully regulated and adapt them to the local reality,” certain that the availability of clear and demanding compliance rules will set the local market on strong footing.

The legal director of IBJR, Rafael Marcondes, commented on the importance of regulation, comparing Brazil with the US as both countries legalized sports betting in 2018. Unlike in the US, where “regulation has been happening quickly… and bringing positive results, … Brazil has fallen behind, allowing the proliferation of companies that are not committed to responsible gaming, which jeopardizes the credibility of the market without providing minimum guarantees to consumers,” Marcondes concluded.
