Boyd Gaming, the leading online and land-based gambling operator with a strong US presence, released its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2023, pointing to strong growth in revenue. The latest unaudited report emerged Thursday and saw the company report $954.4 million in total revenues for Q4 2023. Compared to the $922.9 million result for the corresponding period in 2022, the latest result shows an increase of more than 3%.

The latest trading update reveals that Boyd Gaming posted $92.6 million in net income for the fourth quarter, representing $0.94 per share, a slight dip when compared to the Q4 2022 result of $172.7 million in net income or $1.63 per share. The total adjusted EBITDAR reported by the company for the fourth quarter of 2023 was $355.5 million, while adjusted earnings were $163.8 million.

A breakdown provided by Boyd Gaming revealed that its gaming and online segments were responsible for the lion’s share of the revenue in the fourth quarter. The total gaming revenue reported by the company in Q4 2023 hit $647.1 million, a result that was slightly below the $653.9 million figure from Q4 2022.

Yet, Boyd Gaming’s revenue from the online segment hit $124.1 million, up by $34 million when compared to the $89.7 million in online revenue reported for the corresponding period the prior year. The company explained that its online segment was positively impacted by the introduction of sports betting in Ohio dating back to January 2023.

In Q4 2023, Boyd Gaming posted food and beverage as well as room revenue of $75.5 million and $50.6 million respectively. Those results were on par with the Q2 2022 figures. Management fees and other revenues for the period were some $56 million.

Online Segment Boosts 2023 Total Revenue

When it comes to the 2023 results, Boyd Gaming also posted strong growth. According to the new report, the company’s total revenue hit $3.74 billion for 2023, a significant increase when compared to the $3.56 billion result for the prior year.

Not unexpectedly, gaming was responsible for the lion’s share of the revenue, a total of $2.61 billion, a result that was only slightly below the 2022 figure. However, the company’s online revenue for 2023 hit $422.2 million, completely surpassing the $254 million result from 2022.

He explained that the outstanding results are a testament to the diversification of the company’s portfolio in combination with strong investments and returns. “Our management teams continued to demonstrate their ability to efficiently manage the business, achieving property-level operating margins above 40% for both the fourth quarter and full year,” added Smith. Playtech, the global supplier of technology and gaming content for online casinos, has announced it reached an agreement with Boyd Interactive, one of the top online casino operators in the United States.

The deal will see the online casinos operated by Boyd Interactive under the Stardust brand in the United States feature both slot games and table games provided by Playtech. Live dealer games from the supplier are also included in the agreement.

The content will be rolled out in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including popular titles such as Age of the Gods, Gold Rush: Cash Collect and Adventures Beyond Wonderland, along with live casino titles such as Adventures Beyond Wonderland, along with different variants of Roulette and Baccarat.

Boyd Interactive appeared on the iGaming scene in 2022, when Boyd Gaming acquired Pala Interactive and all its subsidiaries in a deal worth 170 million dollars. After the acquisition the company was rebranded as Boyd Interactive and shortly after that it launched its Stardust online casinos in the spring of 2023.

In October 2023 Boyd Gaming announced that it had registered healthy online growth as the company’s revenue recorded an increase in the third quarter of the current year.

Expecting Mutual Success

Speaking about the partnership with Boyd Interactive, Marcus Yoder, the Chief Commercial Officer of Playtech USA, declared himself confident that the agreement would bring “mutual success” to the two companies and added that the American company has a “reputation for excellence.”

The Playtech executive added that Boyd Gaming has “expanded its long-standing tradition” on the American gambling market by launching the Stardust online casinos, which aim to deliver “unique entertainment experiences into the online space.”

Jim Ryan, Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Interactive, declared himself “excited” by the addition of games from Playtech into the offerings of Stardust both in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Playtech has been gaining more and more ground on the United States market this year. In July the company formally announced its plans to launch a live casino game show broadcast from a dedicated studio in New Jersey, while in November it launched a new live casino studio in Pennsylvania.

For years, Sumner County and Boyd Gaming-owned The Kansas Star Casino have been engaged in what appeared to be an endless legal battle regarding how much the property is worth, and, automatically, how much the casino should be taxed. 

The repetitive yearly procedure has seen Sumner County appraising the casino at a certain amount, followed by Boyd Gaming’s significantly different appraisal and a fight in court over who is right. 

Now, the courts have decided that the operator of the casino located south of Wichita is owed over $19 million in payments over these ongoing tax disputes.

Who Is Going to Pay the Money Back?

According to the courts, the money will be paid back by Sumner County, the school district, and the City of Mulvane where the venue with over 1,300 slot machines and 40+ table games is located. 

Commenting on the decision, Mulvane’s city manager, Austin St. John, called it a “positive” thing, explaining that they can now put an end to the waiting as they now “know what we’re paying.”

St. John further added that, for the upcoming five years, the authorities will have the conviction that their valuation “is going to be correct”.

At the end of the last tax assessment performed by Sumner County, it was ruled that the casino property should be subject to tax at a value of around $190 million. Boyd Gaming filed an appeal, and the courts decided that the value was at roughly $85.5 million.

In 2022, the city of Mulvane decided to raise its mill levy by another eight mills, anticipating the settlement it would have to pay back to the operator.

Boyd Gaming Sued Kansas State in 2022

In May 2022, Boyd Gaming announced it had sued the state of Kansas on claims that, in the context of the newly introduced sports betting laws, the contract signed by the two parties had been violated. 

The contract’s terms read that provided the Sunflower State introduced slot games that resemble the ones featured by Boyd Gaming at Kansas Star Casino, it would have to pay a $25 million fee to the operator.

Besides the state, other defendants in the case included the Kansas Lottery and the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission.

At the end of October, Boyd Gaming announced a 3% increase in total revenue for the third quarter of 2023, in the context of a slight drop in the year-over-year gaming revenue.

The leading land-based and online gambling operator with a strong presence in the United States, Boyd Gaming, released its latest financial results, outlining details regarding the company’s performance for the third quarter of 2023. The latest unaudited figures, encompassing the three months ended September 30, 2023, reveal that the company posted total revenue of $903.2 million. This result, when compared to the corresponding period in 2022, when revenues halted at $877.3 million, marks an increase of nearly 3%.

The total adjusted EBITDAR for Q3 this year was $320.8 million when compared to the $337.7 million in total adjusted EBITDAR posted for Q3 in 2022. The latest financial update revealed that adjusted earnings for Q3 this year were $137.3 million or $1.36 per share when compared to the $159.2 million or $1.48 per share posted for the corresponding period last year.

A breakdown of the $903.2 million in total revenue revealed that the lion’s share came from the company’s gaming operations. This comes as no surprise, yet, gaming revenue in Q3 halted at $641.2 million, slightly below the $668 million result from Q3 in 2022.

In contrast to the slight dip in gaming revenue, Boyd’s other operations posted an increase in their revenues. Food and beverage revenue increased slightly to $71 million in Q3 this year, while room revenues increased to $48.7 million.

Boyd’s online revenue in Q3 soared to $90.3 million. This result marked a significant increase of 72.4% when compared to the $52.4 million in online revenue posted for the corresponding quarter in 2022. Last but not least, management fee revenue and revenues derived from other operations increased as well, hitting $17.2 million and $34.8 million respectively.

The Company’s Diversified Business Model Brings Benefits

Keith Smith, Boyd’s president and CEO, explained that the latest results reaffirm the company’s diversified business model. He outlined that Boyd continues to see strong results from core play customers, online gaming, as well as its non-gaming operations. According to Smith, all those factors impacted positively the results for Q3 this year. “However, quarterly results were impacted by declines in play from our retail customers and ongoing cost pressures, both related to the challenging economic environment,” he added.

Smith explained that an ongoing focus for Boyd is the creation of value for its shareholders. He pointed out that the recent refurbishment at Fremont helped push the latest results. “And we remain committed to our capital return program, having returned over $1 billion to shareholders in the last two years through our ongoing share repurchases and dividends,” said Smith in conclusion.

Focusing on the bigger picture, Boyd confirmed that the revenue for the first nine months of 2023 hit $2.78 billion. This marked a significant increase when compared to the same period last year when the total revenue halted at $2.63 billion.

The unaudited report released Thursday shows that the company’s total revenue for Q2 2023 hit $917 million. A comparison to the corresponding period last year, when revenue halted at $894.5 million, shows that revenue this year increased slightly.

For the second quarter ended June 30, 2023, Boyd Gaming reported net income of $192.5 million, representing $1.89 per share. That result marked strong growth, considering that the net income reported for Q2 2022 was $146.8 million, representing $1.33 per share.

The recent trading update revealed that the total adjusted EBITDAR reported by the company for the second quarter this year was $351.4 million. This figure represented a slight decrease when compared to the $353.9 million result for the same period in 2022. Finally, adjusted earnings for Q2 2023 hit $161.3 million, down slightly when compared to the $163.5 million result from Q2 last year.

The Company Posts Strong Results despite the Challenging Environment

A breakdown provided by Boyd Gaming revealed strong growth in the company’s online gaming revenue. Overall, online gaming revenue hit $85 million in Q2 this year, representing an increase of nearly 50% when compared to the $56,8 million result from the same period in 2022.

In contrast to the positive results from the online sector, Boyd’s new report revealed that the company’s gaming revenue decreased slightly in Q2 this year. In Q2 2022, the gaming revenue hit $685 million, while for the same period this year, it dipped by 3.5% to $660.7 million.

Additional revenue segments in Q2 showed similar values to the figures from last year with food and beverage revenue hitting $70.4 million and room revenue contributing just short of $50 million.

His father, who owned a California Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas then had an epiphany that with his son’s acumen and legal prowess, they could build an empire.

This much is known to have been true, as Boyd Gaming, which is based in Las Vegas, operates well beyond the silver state. The company owns 28 gaming properties across 10 states in the country, although admittedly – 11 are concentrated in their home state.

Boyd Gaming’s Strength Remains Unchallenged

Bill taking his leave from the board is hardly a reason for concern. Rather, Boyd is in a very good place and moving forward, the company expects to only strengthen its position. Presently, the company is led by Keith Smith, who has been chief executive officer since 2008.

Boyd Gaming has used digital to enhance its land-based operations in recent years. The Las Vegas (Paradise) Nevada-based company is still owned by family members of founder Sam Boyd who opened his first casino in 1975.

The last week has revealed success in the company’s focus on local Las Vegas gamblers through properties such as the iconic Fremont Hotel & Casino located Downtown in the heart of the Fremont Street Experience and other locals-friendly venues like Gold Coast, Main Street Station, and Sam’s Town.

The company posted Q4 2022 revenues of $922.9m, beating out its $879.8m take for the same quarter last year. The Las Vegas locals market drove the earnings. Net income was up more than 57% with fourth-quarter earnings of $172.7m compared to $109.8m for the fourth quarter of 2021.

Digital Growth Supports Land-based Sector

Keith Smith focused on future earnings opportunities in a recent investor call saying that the company will continue with a strategy of increasing growth in the digital sector in order to further support the land-based casinos.

“We took an important step forward in our online growth strategy with our recent acquisition of Pala Interactive, which gives us the talent and technology to begin building our regional online casino business,” Smith said.

“While online casinos are now limited to just a few states, we believe in the long-term potential from igaming. Owning and operating our own igaming operation will allow us to leverage our nationwide portfolio and extensive customer database to create a profitable online casino business,” he added.

Total Boyd Gaming revenue for the year was up 3.8% to $3.56b, outshining the company’s previous record of $3.70b.

While gaming costs were up and revenue was down slightly, the company more than made up for it in other metrics including food and beverage revenue up 20%, rooms revenue rose 22.7%, and other revenue was up 48.2%.

Focusing on continued organic growth, Smith said: “While the opportunities from online and land-based reinvestments are compelling, we also believe there is upside from continued organic growth in our existing operations, particularly in hotel revenues, meeting, and convention business, and other non-gaming revenues,” Smith said.
