Playtech Battles €122 Million Payment Dispute with Caliplay

According to Playtech, Caliplay has declined to settle its dues, amounting to a staggering €122 million ($131 million) in fees accumulated between 2023 and 2024.

The refusal to pay comes amidst a protracted legal battle between the two entities. Caliplay has sought to terminate its contractual obligations with Playtech, sparking a contentious legal tussle that has yet to reach a resolution. Despite the mounting financial strain, Playtech remains optimistic about recovering the outstanding funds through legal recourse, reported The Evening Standard.

The repercussions of Caliplay’s non-payment have reverberated through Playtech’s financial statements. Notably, the company reported a significant surge in profits for the fiscal year 2023, reaching €235.8 million ($253 million). This substantial increase in profits includes the unreceived fees from Caliplay, reflecting Playtech’s confidence in eventual reimbursement.

The company disclosed a revenue figure of €1.7 billion ($1.84 billion), reflecting a year-on-year growth of 7%. Conversely, EBITDA reached €406.5 million ($440.3 million), marking a 12% increase.

Mor Weizer, the CEO of Playtech, conveyed his unwavering confidence in the company’s resilience amid the ongoing challenges, stating that they remained confident in their ability to execute their strategy and to continue delivering value for their shareholders.

The situation has also fueled speculations surrounding Playtech’s future, with the company becoming a focal point of takeover discussions. Both its depressed share price relative to earnings and recent acquisition attempts on other industry players have intensified the speculation.

Weizer hinted at Playtech’s active involvement in potential acquisitions, emphasizing the company’s robust financial position with a substantial cash reserve.

However, industry analysts caution against overlooking the potential ramifications of the Caliplay dispute. Neil Shah, director of research at Edison Group, highlighted the significance of the impending trial in October, suggesting that an unfavorable outcome could inflict substantial financial losses on Playtech.

Despite the looming uncertainty, market sentiments remain somewhat buoyant, with Playtech shares experiencing a marginal uptick in recent trading sessions. Analysts at Jefferies remarked on the market’s apparent pessimism, underscoring the likelihood of a negotiated settlement and the importance of maintaining a constructive relationship with Caliplay.

As Playtech braces for the legal showdown in the coming months, the outcome of the dispute with Caliplay will undoubtedly shape the company’s financial trajectory and market standing in the foreseeable future.

BMM Testlabs Australia, which is a leader in the provision of certification services for gaming companies, has brought in Zilevski as its latest SVP of client services. In his new role, he will work directly with the EVP and general manager for the APACAF region.

Strengthening Client Services and Technical Understanding

He hailed Zilevski’s experience and knowledge of the industry and what he brought to the table, commending the man as an established industry specialist. Zilevski’s strong qualities include a deeper understanding of the technical side of the business as well as a good rapport with clients.

“Mario is exceptionally qualified to provide guidance and support to our clients, and his promotion to Senior Vice President of Client Services is well deserved,” White said, hailing the new addition.

The man was excited about the opportunity to be a part of BMM Australia’s team and increase his responsibilities within the company’s structure. He mentioned that he has been working with the company from various global offices over the past years and has accumulated important in-depth technical knowledge that spans numerous international markets and customer engagement models.

The Californian lawyer allegedly used more than $8 million of her clients’ money to sustain a lifestyle of luxury, involving frequent gambling bouts. She has now agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud and money laundering, based on information provided by the California Central District Court. King is said to have gambled $300,000 a day.

Crime Referred to the FBI for Investigation

King spent six months in a VIP suite at Wynn where she was gambling at the casino and visiting other properties as well. The funds used to fuel this habit were mostly owned by investors who had invested in King Family Lending LLC (KFL) in the hopes of securing a high yield on their investment.

King advertised her company as an entity that had been offering loans to celebrities and professional athletes, which was based on a “pawn shop model” whereby the loans were secured with valuables owned by the high net worth individuals.

However, this was a front, the court found out as not a single loan had been issued under KFL. Then, in February this year, one of the investors, LDR International, pressed on and made accusations that King had been misusing the money and pocketed more than $10 million in investor money. LDR International did not lose any time and referred the case straight to the FBI.

Even before that, King had faced some difficulties. She was prohibited from entering Wynn last year when it was found out that she was also trying to scam staff members and fellow guests. An employee at the casino invested her $5,000 savings in the business.

A Husband Who Is Not Happy with His Wife

Even more interestingly, King is the wife of Kamran Pahlavi, the great-nephew of Iran’s last Shah. He commented on her case in an interview for LA Magazine in which he said that he had left his wife after he found out that she was involved in shady dealings. It was he who introduced King to LDR in the first place, however.

As to her prison term, King is now looking at a less severe penalty, with prosecutors acquiescing that she should receive a penalty in the lower end. This means that she is looking at anything between three to five years if a judge shows lenience. Conversely, a crime such as hers may put her away for up to 30 years instead.
