The commercial gaming industry in the United States has experienced a remarkable surge in revenue, marking its third consecutive year of record-breaking financial success. According to the latest report from the American Gaming Association (AGA), the industry’s annual revenue reached an unprecedented $66.5 billion in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s high by a substantial margin.

AGA CEO Bill Miller Applauds Milestone Growth

The remarkable growth was highlighted by a record-breaking fourth quarter in 2023, with revenues soaring to $17.4 billion, further solidifying the industry’s position as a key contributor to the nation’s economy. December alone witnessed an astonishing $6.2 billion in revenue, marking the highest-grossing month in the history of the industry.

AGA President and CEO, Bill Miller, attributed this phenomenal success to the burgeoning demand for gaming among American adults. Miller emphasized that the industry’s ability to sustain this momentum would require collaborative efforts to combat illegal operators while simultaneously promoting responsible gambling initiatives. He stressed the AGA’s commitment to leading these efforts throughout 2024.

The evolution of the commercial gaming landscape was evident in the report, with online gaming emerging as a significant contributor, accounting for nearly a quarter or 24.7% of total commercial gaming revenue in 2023, reaching a new annual high.

Gaming Revenue Booms Across Traditional Gambling, Sports Betting, and iGaming

Across multiple sectors, significant growth was evident. In traditional gaming, revenue from brick-and-mortar casinos surged to $49.4 billion, with a notable 19 out of 27 markets achieving record annual revenue.

The sports betting sector experienced remarkable expansion, as total wagers peaked at $119.8 billion and revenue reached $10.9 billion, fueled by maturation in existing markets and entry into new territories like Massachusetts and Ohio.

Meanwhile, iGaming saw a substantial uptick, with online casino revenue jumping by 22.9% to $6.2 billion in states with fully legalized online gaming.

The report also highlighted the geographic distribution of gaming revenue, with notable growth observed in various markets. The Las Vegas Strip emerged as the top-performing market, followed by New Jersey, Chicago metropolitan area, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Furthermore, the commercial gaming industry’s contributions to state and local governments reached unprecedented levels in 2023, with operators paying an estimated $14.4 billion in direct gaming revenue taxes—an increase of 9.7% compared to the previous year.

This influx of revenue plays a vital role in supporting critical public services, infrastructure projects, and education programs across the country. As the industry continues to thrive, Miller emphasized its role as an economic driver, creating jobs and providing essential funding for communities nationwide.

Malta-based company that provides entertainment to the online casino industry via its premium gaming products, PressEnter Group, has announced it would be strengthening its senior management by adding industry veteran Phillip Bells to the team.

Appointed as the new chief commercial officer, Bell will join the group that incorporates brands like NitroCasino, XLBet, UltraCasino, JustSpinat, and 21.com at a busy time following its effective Management Buyout (MBO) toward the end of 2022.

Phillip to Support the Group’s Long-Term Plans

Ever since the MBO took place, the company used the leadership of chief executive officer Lahcene Merzoug and his management team to optimize all operations while promoting an entrepreneurial culture able to penetrate all aspects of the group.

In this particular context, Bell’s appointment is expected to further help the group reach its long-term scalability and sustainable growth plans.

From his new position, Bell will be responsible for drawing up and implementing a series of optimized strategies aimed at business and commercial growth both in the short and long run.

In this regard, the new CCO will use his impressive track record and experience as head of partnerships at the QiH Group as well as his marketing and commercial positions at iconic industry operators like Ladbrokes, Esports Entertainment Group, and Argyll Entertainment.

CEO Lahcene praised Bell’s successful activity across the previous companies he worked for, calling him “a great addition” to the group’s currently “incredibly strong senior management team.”

“An Honor and an Adventure” to Take on the Role

Bell called it “both an honor and an adventure” to accept the new position as CCO at PressEnter Group while expressing delight for being part of the “forward-thinking business during such an important chapter.”

While only having spent a short time with the company, Bell explained that he was able to witness its brilliance first-hand while collaborating with the “creative, talented, and innovative team.”

The new CCO also explained that he was prepared to provide his personal input and experience with the purpose of driving innovation and promoting quicker growth rates while making sure the group remains a “trailblazer in the industry.”

In March, popular game provider Swintt entered a new agreement with PressEnter, with the purpose of using the latter’s fast-developing network of online casinos to enter fresh markets and strengthen its foothold there.

In December 2022, PressEnter launched CasinoFest, a new casino meant to disrupt the iGaming industry and provide a fresh way of enjoying online casino gameplay.

The American Gaming Association has published its latest Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, providing state-by-state and nationwide insight into the performance of the United States’ gambling industry. The August results suggest that the US gaming industry might be in for a third record-breaking year in a row.

As reported by the AGA, casino gambling industry revenue continued to grow, while gaming revenue as a whole increased by 4.9% in August. According to the association, this marks the 30th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

Leveraging data from state regulators, the AGA concluded that the US gaming industry exceeded the $5 billion mark for the twelfth month in a row, sitting at $5.14 billion in August. The first eight months of the year, meanwhile, saw the industry accumulate revenue of $43.15 billion. This figure notably marks a 10.4% YOY increase.

Growth wasn’t universal, however. According to the report, 17 of the 33 states with commercial gambling markets saw their revenues increase. Meanwhile, six markets recorded marginally lower results. These included DC (-0.7%), Florida (-0.9%), Indiana (-1.2%), Iowa (-0.5%), Missouri (-0.3%) and Mississippi (-3.7%).

All Verticals Reported YOY Growth

The AGA also provided an insight into how the separate verticals fared. The association attributed the vast growth to the iGaming sector and pointed out that land-based gaming revenue growth has been experiencing a slight slowdown.

For reference, in August, land-based casinos and sportsbooks experienced a revenue increase of 0.8% year-on-year. Their online counterparts, meanwhile, saw their revenue skyrocket by 24.6% year-on-year. The AGA noted that Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Ohio were major growth drivers.

Traditional slots and table games are experiencing slower growth but are still responsible for much of the traditional casinos’ revenue. In August, these segments generated $4.06 billion in revenue, which represents a modest 1.1% YOY increase. Slot machines were responsible for almost three-quarters of that number.

During the first 8 months of the year, traditional slots and table games have generated $33.03 billion, surpassing last year’s figure for the same period by 3.3%.

The off-season period in professional sports, meanwhile, led to the usual decrease in revenue. Despite that, the figures exceeded the ones recorded in the summer of 2022, attesting to the increased interest in betting.

In total, sports betting handle for August was $6.67 billion, up 36.1% YOY. This translated into total revenue of $583.1 million, which is 21.2% higher than what the industry recorded in April 2022. This figure was bolstered by the recent launch of betting in additional states.

Through August, sports betting in the USA recorded revenue of $6.14 billion, a stellar 60.4% up YOY. Handle for the same period reached a whopping $68.23 billion. According to the AGA, these figures mean that betting handle is likely to surpass the $100 billion mark by the end of the year.

Finally, the AGA reported that the six states where online gambling is legal saw revenue from the vertical increase by 23.4% YOY to $495.8 million. Delaware was the only of the six markets that failed to report growth.

Through August, iGaming revenue reached $3.94 billion, representing a YOY increase of 22.7%.

The top-tier provider of content to the iGaming industry, Pragmatic Play, has announced it would expand its foothold on the Swiss territory as a result of a fresh commercial agreement inked with GAMRFIRST, a company under the operation of Barrière Group-owned Casino Barrière Montreux.

The news comes as a natural follow-up of the long and successful string of new agreements inked by the same provider including the live casino content deal signed with Bally’s Interactive last week and the Superbet agreement at the end of July.

The main purpose of the new commercial agreement is for the developer to continue to promote its development in Switzerland and beyond.

50 Pragmatic Play Slots, Live on GAMRFIRST.ch

The studio’s highly praised collection of slots has already gone live on the GAMRFIRST.ch platform, which is the online version of the brick-and-mortar casino provider.

According to the terms of the deal, 50 premium slots can already be played on the platform, with honorable mentions of games like Sweet Bonanza and The Dog House

Pragmatic Play’s chief operating officer, Irina Cornides, spoke about the high reputation of Casino Barrière Montreux in Switzerland, where their studio has kept expanding its presence.

Cornides also expressed delight to add the operator’s GAMRFIRST brand to their constantly growing database of customers in the “key regulated market.”

The COO also acknowledged the shared “commitment to creating safe and enjoyable gaming experiences” with the online casino.

“A Wonderful Addition” to GAMRFIRST’s Roster of Games

At the same time, GAMRFIRST.ch’s head of online, Patrick Ballestraz, called Pragmatic Play’s portfolio of industry-leading slots a “wonderful addition” to their roster of games, praising the success their titles had already recorded among Swiss players.

Ballestraz also expressed their belief that the news of Pragmatic Play’s content being added to their online casino brand would be very well received by their customers who are already accustomed to the provider’s games.

With the help of the new deal, GAMRFIRST expects to keep building momentum while leveraging its stance on the iGaming market in Switzerland.

At the moment, Pragmatic Play released up to eight new slots on a monthly basis. The provider is also busy delivering Virtual Sports, Bingo, and Live Casino games, all belonging to its multi-product portfolio that can be accessed with the help of just one application programming interface

Earlier in the week, Pragmatic Play announced all of its three verticals have gone live with Betwarrior Mendoza on the market in Argentina, following its launch in Mendoza with Super 7 at the end of August.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has published its Q2 2023 Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, reporting Q2 record of $16.07 billion. This represents an 8.1% year-on-year increase and marks the 10th quarter of annual growth in a row.

Q2 2023 is also the second-highest grossing quarter in the history of commercial gaming in America, only surpassed by Q1 2023, which is the industry’s best quarter yet. As a result, the total H1 2023 revenue is a whopping $32.71 billion, making the period the strongest half-year for the commercial gambling industry in the States.

The AGA also noted that the first six months of the year have resulted in an estimated $7.28 billion in direct gaming tax revenue, received by states and local governments. This represents a 12.9% year-on-year increase and sets the industry on track to generating more annual gaming tax revenue than ever before.

In total, 23 of the 34 US jurisdictions with a form of legal gaming experienced YOY revenue growth in Q2 2023.

Digital Gaming Made These Numbers Possible

The AGA report noted that land-based gaming is still responsible the larger part of the commercial revenue. However, the spectacular growth is attributable to the fast expansion of online sports wagering and iGaming, the association added.

Q2 revenue from land-based casino operations sat at $12.38 billion, representing a modest YOY increase of 0.9%. Online casino gaming, meanwhile, generated $1.48 billion in revenue.

Online gaming as a whole, on the other hand, skyrocketed by 43.1%, to $3.68 billion in Q2 2023. The AGA noted that the growth can be attributed to the recent launch of online sports betting in Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts and Ohio.

The commercial sports betting industry (both retail and online) posted total revenue of $2.3 billion. The figure translates into an increase of 56.6% and marks the strongest quarter for sports wagering in the United States.

AGA’s president and CEO Bill Miller said that the growth of gaming continues to have a positive impact on communities thanks to the industry’s tax contributions. He said that the results clearly show that the post-pandemic recovery wasn’t merely a fluke.

To sustain this momentum, the AGA will continue enlisting more allies in our fight against the illegal market, bolstering responsible gaming, and building a business environment that allows our innovative industry to bring world-class entertainment to adults across America.

Bill Miller, president & CEO, AGA

Earlier this month, the AGA announced its 2023 Hall of Fame honorees.

DraftKings has unveiled a brand new commercial featuring two of its brand ambassadors. The new commercial will also feature the American operator’s brand-new tagline, “The crown is yours.”

Preceding the new National Football League season by a few weeks, the new commercial will feature the retired NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, as well as the comedian Kevin Hart. The celebrities will leverage their ambassadorial roles to promote DraftKings’ brand ahead of the NFL action.

The upcoming commercial is set to launch on Monday, August 21. It will promote one of the operator’s tempting promotional deals and welcome offers that provide players with hundreds of dollars in free bets.

The new tagline, meanwhile, is meant to highlight DraftKings’ titular royal theme while promoting the company as an operator willing to elevate its players. The tagline will be deployed across DraftKings’ channels and social media accounts.

Like Fitz-Magic

The new commercial will feature the two ambassadors benefiting from a DraftKings offer that provides players with $200 in free bets after placing a $5 bet. In the commercial, Hart says that the operator is spoiling him while Fitzpatrick would call the promotional deal “Fitz-magic.”

DraftKings’ chief marketing officer, Stephanie Sherman, addressed the launch of the new commercial and her company’s vision. She said that the DraftKings team really resonated with Hart’s lighthearted and witty humor. Because of his qualities as a comedian, Hart was the perfect person to bring DraftKings’ exciting promotions to life.

Sherman added that the new commercial reflects the company’s desire to innovate while continuing to engage fans. This is further reflected in DraftKings’ customer-centric approach and new tagline that suggests the operators’ players are the true kings.

DraftKings Continues to Defy Expectations

Earlier this month, the American operator published its Q2 2023 results. This was notably the company’s first profitable quarter since its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

In addition, DraftKings’ favorable performance helped it defy the skeptics who believed the company’s performance would continue to decline.

While the company’s resilience will continue to be tested in the third and fourth quarters of the year, DraftKings remains fairly optimistic about its business. The operator is certain that its operations in Kentucky and Puerto Rico will be major contributors to its business that will help it excel in Q4.

Crown Gaming México has selected Enrique Manjarrez who will be stepping into the new position. He is an important addition to the company’s team of experts, as the man is a seasoned veteran with more than 20 years of relevant experience in the industry.

An Industry Specialist With Excellent Track Record

The US gambling industry trade group, the American Gaming Association (AGA), announced Wednesday new data regarding the revenue reported by the commercial gambling sector in the country, acknowledging a strong start to the year. Judging by the new data, the US commercial gaming revenue, which includes iGaming, land-based and sports betting revenue hit $5.50 billion in January this year.

That result marked strong growth of 21.1% when compared to the total gross gaming revenue (GGR) reported for the same period in 2022. Moreover, the result this January further complements the growth observed in the last few years marking the 23rd consecutive month with a reported revenue increase.

The latest result comes after the AGA reported that 2022 was a record-setting for the commercial gaming industry. Without any doubt, the legalization and introduction of sports betting to new US states, combined with the expansion of some of the existing iGaming markets impacted positively the results. That positive impact will likely continue to be in effect throughout this year as well, keeping in mind the strong start recorded in January.

According to revenue data reported by state regulators and compiled by the AGA, nationwide gaming industry win from traditional casino games, sports betting and iGaming reached $5.50 billion in January 2023,

explains a statement released by the AGA

Sports Betting, iGaming GGR Soars in January

A breakdown of the $5.50 billion in total GGR for the commercial gaming sector released by the Association reveals that the revenue growth was primarily driven by sports betting and iGaming. Sports betting GGR in January this year hit $1.02 billion. This result marked the first time sports betting GGR surpasses the billion-dollar figure. When compared to the result from January last year, the $1.02 billion in sports betting GGR marked an increase of 58.2%.

On the other hand, iGaming GGR soared in January as well, increasing to $482 million when compared to the same period in 2022. That result marked a significant increase of 20.6%, impacting the overall result for the month positively.

Although iGaming and sports betting revenue increased significantly, the land-based sector performed well too. Slot GGR for January jumped by 15.5%, hitting $2.86 billion in revenue. Without any doubt, this figure reaffirmed the strong market share of slots.

Last but not least, the revenue reported by commercial table games also marked an increase. In total, table game GGR hit $838 million in January, representing an increase of 14.7% when compared to the corresponding period a year ago.

us_commercial_casinos_set_new_revenue_record2022 was a very good year for commercial casinos in the US. Gamblers left a total of $60.4 billion in the machines and on the tables giving the house edge its best year ever.

On Wednesday, the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker showed that land-based gambling accounted for about 80% of the win with online casinos and internet sportsbetting picking up the other roughly 20% of last year’s revenue.

On a nationwide basis, online revenues in America lag behind many European markets. The U.K. is out front with 65% of revenues coming from iGaming, France at about 29%, and Germany at roughly 28%. Drawing in from the U.S. macro to the four states that offer commercial gaming on land and online, online revenues averaged 40.7 percent of the totals.

Regulated U.S. commercial online casino revenue grew to about $5 billion – an increase of 35.2%. Six states currently offer internet casino gambling: Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and West Virginia. New bills are moving through the legislative process in five more states to legalize online gambling. Those states are Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Hampshire, and New York.

US Commercial Casinos Won over $60 Billion in 2022

The more than $60 billion casinos won last year is almost 14% more than 2021 totals.

Tribal casinos and state lotteries report their numbers separately, but if fourth-quarter and full-year numbers hold up for tribal operators it could push the total for the US industry past $100 billion, a new record of its own if that occurs. The National Indian Gaming Commission will release its 2022 revenue report later this year.

According to an Associated Press report by Wayne Parry in the Concord Courier, AGA vice president David Forman said that number would put the American gambling industry revenue about on par with U.S. revenues from the sale of beer.

Bill Miller, the association’s president, and CEO said: “Our industry significantly outpaced expectations in 2022. Simply put, American adults are choosing casino gaming for entertainment in record numbers, benefiting communities and taking market share from the predatory, illegal marketplace.”

VP Forman added: “That growth is almost the equivalent of adding another Las Vegas Strip to the U.S. market.”

While Chicago, the Mississippi Gulf coast, and Baltimore-Washington, D.C. markets also produce healthy revenues, the Las Vegas Strip and Atlantic City reign supreme as the top-performing U.S. gambling markets.

Although Nevada lawmakers legalized online casino gambling about the same time New Jersey did, regulators have purposefully neglected to enact a regulatory framework for them, instead opting to only regulate sports betting and poker online.

How the States Stacked Up

That may be the reason online sportsbetting and iGaming numbers are not reported in the AGA tracker rankings when including the legacy Las Vegas Strip and other Nevada markets.

Ranked from 10 through 1, along with their take we find the following:

  • Boulder Strip in Nevada ($966 million +/- = to last year)
  • St. Louis market spanning parts of Missouri and Illinois ($1.1 billion + 3.6%)
  • Detroit ($1.3 billion – 1.4%)
  • Philadelphia ($1.4 billion – 1.8%)
  • New York City ($1.5 billion + 2.6%)
  • Mississippi Gulf coast ($1.6 billion – 0.5%)
  • Chicago region spanning parts of Illinois and Indiana ($2.1 billion + 6.1%)
  • Baltimore-Washington D.C. ($2.2 billion + 8.7%)
  • Atlantic City ($2.8 billion + 8.5%)
  • Las Vegas Strip ($8.2 billion + 17%)

In a turn-around from historic trends, revenue from land-based gaming tables was up 13.9% while the slots take increased by 5.1%.

About one-third of the U.S. adult population made at least one visit to a casino in 2022.

Sports betting continued to grow with 36 states (and D.C.) offering legalized sports betting in 2022 and the AGA predicting that it will be available in 40 states by the end of this year.

iga_and_cniga_tribal_gaming_seminar_hIghlights_from_ice_londonThe Indian Gaming Association and Pechanga.net of America presented a Tribal Gaming Seminar at ICE in London last week. One of the presentations to attendees focused on learning lessons from recent attempts, failures, and successful launches of online casino gaming and sports betting in the U.S.

This was done in light of what legacy gaming providers such as tribal operators are willing to participate in as far as regulatory models and to demonstrate the evolving attitudes of tribal operators looking for a win-win situation with other stakeholders.

The seminar outline suggests that new operators need to secure the cooperation of current stakeholders in the gambling industry before launching products in those states, some of them large and potentially very lucrative, like California where the Pechanga Band of Indians operates Pechanga Resort Casino near Temecula, California. The casino is one of the largest resort casinos in America with over 5,400 slot machines and about 200,000 sq ft of gaming space.

Tribal and Commercial Propositioned Both Failed in November

Two separate ballot propositions for sports betting failed to pass in California during the last regular election when residents were asked whether or not they wanted online betting – a positive result could have eventually led to online casino regulation as well. One of the propositions was backed by commercial operators and the other one was primarily backed by the state’s tribes.

Commercial global brands were unable to push their referendums across the finish line, largely due to a lack of understanding about the tribes’ unique positions in the markets as well as the political clout they heft, along with the revenue goals the legacy operators seek for their constituents – the tribal members.

The synopsis stated that the tribes are not opposed to innovation, modernization, and expansion into new verticals and channels as long as it doesn’t threaten their future participation and involvement in them.

According to an in-depth report on CDC Gaming Reports, when asked how he expects online gaming to change over the next two years, Mark Macarro, Pechanga Band of Indians Chairman, told listeners at the seminar that iGaming is inevitable in the state of California and that Millennials are driving the new gaming channels.

I think there’s a demographic proclivity to want to play online. It doesn’t exist right now with the Baby Boomers and Gen X. But Millennials are different players and we’re not sure that slot machines will be what they want to play”, he said.

Not in my Backyard Unless I Play Too

Macarro was joined on the panel by California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) chairman James Siva. The CNIGA chairman was also of the opinion that the commercial betting bill was rejected because voters expected the commercial interests to cooperate with tribal gaming interests in the state.

Siva enumerated the number of tribal gaming interests in the US at 270 and noted that 70 of those tribes’ locations are within the state’s borders.

Tribal gaming represents about a quarter of all gaming revenue in the US and 44% of that occurs in California, according to Siva.

So you break that down and that means that California tribes represent nearly a tenth of the entire gaming market of the U.S. Commercial, tribal, everything”.

He noted that perhaps cooperation or diplomacy may have been a more successful tactic than steamrolling, per see.

Either they massively underestimated the size and reach of those tribes, both politically and financially, or they maybe had bad campaign consultants”, he said.

Panelists Agree Tribal/Commercial Partnerships may be way Forward.

I think there’s still a path for tribes and the commercial operators to work together, but it’s going to be a path and relationship that’s decided by the tribes. This isn’t the first time we’ve had commercial entities want a seat at the table as equal to tribes”, Siva said.

This need for commercial entities to respect the sovereignty of the California tribes and negotiate with them for access to California, as they would with legislators and regulators in other states, was reiterated by Macarro, who promised that the tribes would always counter non-diplomatic attempts to launch in the state

Among the things we learned is that if you have two similar-sounding measures in front of the voters on the same ballot, they will get confused and vote no”, he said.

So if nothing else changes from the corporates, if they make another run at this without doing a lot of the stuff we talked about as being necessary to be successful, it’ll be regarded as hostile by the tribes. And all we would have to do is put another ballot on the initiative. Confuse the voters, they’ll vote no, and both will go down in flames again”, he said.
