Shaun Kelley, an analyst at Bank of America, highlighted the potential correlation between obesity and problem gambling. Studies indicate that a considerable portion of casino revenue, estimated between 10% to 30%, comes from customers displaying problematic betting patterns, some of whom are also struggling with obesity. If these individuals turn to weight loss drugs, it could create a 0-4% revenue headwind for the US commercial gaming sector, particularly affecting slot machines and regional gaming establishments.

The implications would extend beyond casinos. Traditional food and beverage producers like Walmart, as well as fast-food chains such as McDonald’s and Taco Bell, might face challenges as consumers, influenced by these drugs, shift towards healthier dietary choices. Conversely, athletic apparel brands like Deckers and Lululemon could see a boost as consumers prioritize healthier lifestyles, redirecting savings from reduced food consumption into fitness-related expenses.

Mark Purcell, a biopharmaceuticals analyst at Morgan Stanley, noted that analysts are predicting the weight-loss drug market to grow exponentially, with revenue in the segment expected to reach $77 billion by 2030.

Amidst these changes, gaming giants like Boyd Gaming, Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International, Penn Entertainment, and Red Rock Resorts find themselves at the center of attention. MGM and Caesars, the largest operators on the Las Vegas Strip, might benefit as weight loss encourages more people to travel. However, regional operators like Boyd Gaming and Penn Entertainment, which have a significant presence in Nevada, could face challenges due to the shift towards healthier living.

The casino industry is not the only one under scrutiny. Airlines, especially those like United Airlines, could experience significant savings if passengers shed weight. Money laundering is a criminal activity that involves individuals depositing funds, usually gained from illegal activities, through different businesses and then withdrawing them. Such crimes can often be complex and difficult to solve but not impossible. A recently released report suggests that one person, believed to be involved in drug trafficking, laundered proceeds through casinos across Winnipeg, Canada.

As announced by CTV News, a year-long investigation into the criminal activity resulted in the arrest of a person who was allegedly involved in the trafficking of illegal drugs, including cocaine and fentanyl. A 30-year-old man from Winnipeg with the initials M.R.H. was arrested on September 19, 2023, and charged for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering.

Once he was arrested, the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) executed a search warrant on his home. Reportedly, police found a large number of drugs, including 882 fentanyl tablets, 498 grams of crack cocaine, 26 gabapentin pills as well as 241 Percocet tablets. Additionally, law enforcement uncovered 348 tablets with unknown substances along with cash.

Ill-Gained Funds Were Laundered through Casinos

The arrest comes after a long operation by the Manitoba RCMP. Last year, law enforcement was contacted by the gambling regulator in the province, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, which flagged suspicious activities recorded across casinos in Winnipeg. This prompted the Mounties to launch a large-scale investigation against the illicit activity that involved drug trafficking and money laundering. The operation was called Project Doom.

The investigation uncovered that drugs were distributed to remote First Nation communities, including St. Theresa Point, Island Lake, Garden Hill and Red Sucker Lake, among others. Additionally, drug trafficking occurred in neighboring North Spirit Lake in Ontario.

According to the investigation, the suspect who was arrested was allegedly involved in drug trafficking. Through the illicit activity, the individual was able to accumulate large sums of cash which were then laundered through casinos by cashing in and out gambling chips. The Mounties did not confirm the total sum involved in the criminal activity, but it is believed that it was substantial.

After the suspect was arrested, he was released on CA$50,000 bail ($36,500) with special conditions, including a prohibition from visiting gambling venues. It’s important to note that the charges against M.R.H. are yet to be proven in court, which means that he remains innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

A discussion posted on Reddit earlier this year tells the story of a person that was addicted to Adderall, as well as gambling. The person claimed that once he started taking Ozempic, they immediately saw how “stupid” gambling is and significantly decreased the intake of Adderall which stemmed from surgery. “Almost immediately the thought of gambling seemed so obviously stupid – not just dumb financially but a waste of time. It actually seemed boring to me for the first time ever,” wrote the person who claimed that Ozempic worked “almost like a literal miracle.”

Evidence about the Effectiveness of Semaglutide against Addiction Is Insufficient

The Harvard psychiatrist who explores the connection between metabolism and mental health, Dr Chris Palmer, explained: “The exact same brain circuits that are regulating our food intake are also playing a role in our addictive behaviors.” He said that actions or substances that are related to survival and reproduction result in a dopamine award and this is precisely what addictive substances can trigger as well. According to Dr. Palmer, substances that can trigger this dopamine reward system can be considered addictive and those can include food, alcohol, nicotine or even foods with lots of fat or sugars.

While there are other unconfirmed reports and claims about the miracle benefits of semaglutide when it comes to combatting addiction, hard evidence and trials with humans are insufficient. Without any doubt, people affected by problem gambling or addicted to smoking or alcohol need to first consult with an expert rather than taking prescription drugs that may have unexpected long-term effects on their health.
