Turning Stone Resort Casino in upstate New York is reinventing itself in its image after twenty years of leading the Region in gambling opportunities. The exercise involves an investment of some $370m in capital.

However, the resort is not simply slapping on a new coat of paint and sprucing up what exists already, but allowing itself to evolve entirely with new outdoor event spaces, a hotel addition, and a new conference center.

Helping the evolution along is the world-renowned architectural and design firm, Gensler.

Early 2024 Groundbreaking on Evolutionary Changes for Turning Stone

Groundbreaking is set for early next year and the investment is expected to create a one-time economic impact of over $600M with once-off jobs totaling 3,600 and the generation of some $22.1M in local and state tax revenues.

It’s unclear if the current plans are in addition to or a reimagining of renovations the Nation announced after reopening from a brief pandemic closure.

Existing conference space will be doubled with new and improved indoor and outdoor event opportunities including eight new meeting rooms, two new ballrooms, and a Grand Ballroom measuring 30,000 square feet. The Grand Ballroom will hold a terrace overlooking The Lodge’s Great Lawn, and Shenandoah Golf Course. New parking spaces will total 2,000 and the outdoor courtyard will comprise three new outdoor event spaces.

When completed the expansion will create New York’s largest convention center. There are only three other venues in the entire state of the same caliber and size. Promoters expect the new venues, along with existing amenities to expand the resort’s ability to attract large crowds from throughout the New England and Mid-Atlantic region.

A new Four-Diamond hotel called The Crescent. Will serve the needs of the expanded footfall and conference/event attendees. The hotel will feature nearly 260 new rooms including nearly two dozen one and two-bedroom suites as well as a welcome lobby with a lounge and fireplace to greet guests. Fine dining and a quick service cafe are included with Salt Seafood and Raw Bar in a tastefully unique rustic design space.

The competent existing lodging at the resort will be transformed throughout with renovations and enhancements to the Forbes Four Star award-winning “The Lodge “. The Hotel will be rebranded as The Brook.

Visitors can expect to see The Lounge with Caesars Sportsbook move to Turning Stone’s Exit 33, NY Rec & Social Club (formerly Lava Nightclub), with over 60 high-definition screens, plenty of cushy and cozy seating, and “fan caves” along with entertainment options galore such as foosball, pool, arcade games, and an outdoor patio with blackjack games and firepits.

A 5,000 sq ft medical center will be included in partnership with Rome Health for working team members as well as guests with expanded hours.

Outdoor additions will include a golf practice area with a driving range and short game area designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. More than 120 EV chargers including 36 Tesla Superchargers will be installed across the Nation’s lands for guests and employees’ use.

A new corporate entity or name will be born to reflect the evolution at the highest levels with the 3-decades-old Oneida Nation Enterprises becoming Turning Stone Enterprises on October 1st.

A Decade Since Historic Settlement Agreement

This year marks the 10th anniversary of a historic Settlement Agreement between the Oneida Indian Nation, Oneida and Madison Counties, and New York State. The agreement has helped to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for local communities as well as to inspire strong partnerships between the Oneida Nation, businesses, and regional governments.

Novamedia, a company operating lottery in five European countries, announced its decision to stop investing in online gaming in the Netherlands. The company said that the regulations in the country make it impossible to raise funds.

Novamedia, which is the owner and developer of the Postcode Lottery format, launched iGaming in the Netherlands following the legalization of online gambling in the country.

The company’s online brand, Novamedia Gaminb BV, secured a license back in 2022. Unfortunately, Novamedia said, the market has been getting more tightly regulated to the point of becoming unsustainable for iGaming companies.

Novamedia said that it is no longer able to raise funds in the Netherlands and will therefore “make no further investments” in its Dutch online gaming operations. Instead, Novamedia will focus on exploring new opportunities from within its safe lotteries.

Novamedia has therefore decided to continue exploring opportunities for innovation from within its safe lotteries themselves and, for the time being, to make no further investment in the opportunities that online gaming could offer in the Netherlands.

In the meantime, Novamedia will continue seeking to obtain lottery licenses in other key markets.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, is on track with its plans to ban untargeted gambling advertising. The country believes that way too many minors and at-risk people are being bombarded with ads.

Novamedia’s lotteries are currently active in five European countries. The company, also known as Postcode Lottery Group, was founded more than 32 years ago. Within a little more than three decades, Novamedia has managed to raise a whopping $13.7 billion for good causes.

Novamedia recognizes the crucial role of charities in tackling important national and global challenges and believes that it is important to “futureproof” the charity lottery sector and “super-charge” the growth of the vital funding stream.

Novamedia is not happy with the severe limits imposed on charity lotteries. The company believes that removing the restrictions on charity lottery fundraising will free up more money for good causes, helping charity organizations help people who have been impacted by war, crises and disasters.

Novamedia said that it is committed to innovating and channeling players toward its lotteries. This, in turn, will help the company secure more funding for good causes.

The company concluded that it was able to donate a record sum of $936 million to hundreds of charities in 2022 alone. This was all made possible by its record-breaking lottery sales.

This has not changed, but the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) has been reportedly altered to allow players to invest in sportsbooks and cannabis production companies if they choose to.

NBA to Let Players Invest in Sportsbook and Cannabis Companies

This is a dramatic change from the previous CBA which explicitly prohibited athletes to take part in such organizations. The victory can be attributed to the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), a trade body that has been actively advocating for the interests of players.

The original reporting was done by The Athletic which says that no specific details are available immediately, as the agreement has not been finalized. Before a new CBA may enter into effect, it will similarly need to be ratified by both players and owners. However, the changes in how players may structure their investment portfolios do not mean that they can break the existing ethical guidelines of the NBA.

Players are still prohibited to use opioids and drugs, as they are prohibited from placing wagers on the outcomes of events. Some though fear that players may run into even more trouble with fans, as many are beginning to blame players for underperforming and “costing them money” on a wager.

But the new CBA probably reflects a growing momentum within the player base to have the freedom to invest in something that hits close to home – sports betting may be one of those. Even though players would not be able to bet themselves, they would still probably be allowed to promote the betting companies they invest in.

Players May Choose to Launch Sportsbook All on Their Own

This is not exactly surprising, as many sports personalities have already been promoting various sportsbooks actively. In the meantime, some NBA players could be preparing to go ahead and launch their own sports betting companies – this would not be too crazy as an idea.

Kevin Duran, Giannis Antetokounmpo and others have already patents of names that they may use to launch their sports betting operations. But launching a betting operation in a hurry does not always pay off. Even Maxim, a popular lifestyle brand, struggled to maintain operational momentum.
