ohio_casinos_report_surge_in_revenue_The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has released its March 2024 revenue report, revealing a notable surge in revenue for the month. The combined taxable revenue from the state’s four casinos amounted to over $94.7 million, marking a significant 13.4% increase from February 2024’s gaming revenue of $83.5 million.

Moreover, there’s a modest 1.4% annual rise in revenue compared to the previous year. It’s worth noting that this revenue encompasses earnings from both slots and table games and excludes in-person sports betting, as online casinos are not yet legalized in Ohio.

While Ohio has yet to legalize online casinos, recent discussions among lawmakers suggest a potential shift in this landscape. Lawmakers have convened to deliberate on the feasibility of legalizing online casinos, citing the state’s interest in this burgeoning sector and the thriving markets already established in neighboring states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Monthly Revenue Surge Across Ohio Casinos

The OCCC’s March 2024 revenue report indicates across-the-board monthly revenue increases for all four casinos. Of the total taxable revenue of $94.7 million, slot revenue contributed $69.0 million, with table games bringing in $25.7 million. Notably, Hollywood Columbus demonstrated the most substantial monthly progress, with a revenue of $25.6 million, reflecting a robust 13.3% monthly growth. Other casinos also saw notable increases in revenue compared to the previous month:

  • Jack Cleveland Casino: $24.5 million in revenue, a 13.3% monthly rise
  • Hollywood Toledo: $22.5 million in revenue, a 16.8% monthly increase
  • Hard Rock Cincinnati: $22.2 million in revenue, up by 10.5% from February

Annual Revenue Trends

Examining the year-over-year performance, there are varied trends among the casinos. Hollywood Toledo and Hollywood Columbus both reported annual rises, with increases of 8.2% and 5.1%, respectively. Jack Cleveland Casino saw a marginal annual increase of 0.4%. However, Hard Rock Cincinnati experienced a notable annual decline of nearly 7.5%, the only casino to do so in March. This contrasts with February, where Jack Cleveland Casino had shown a year-over-year decline.

Recent discussions among Ohio lawmakers have revolved around the possibility of legalizing online casinos. The Study Commission on the Future of Gaming in Ohio, in its initial meetings, has delved into the topic, with upcoming sessions slated to address various aspects, including iLottery, racinos/charitable gaming, sports betting, and daily fantasy sports. Proponents argue that regulating online casinos could aid in addressing issues related to problem gambling while potentially generating significant tax revenue for the state. Estimates suggest that Ohio could generate between $205 million and $410 million annually in new tax revenue if online casinos were legalized.

The success and revenue generated by neighboring states like Michigan and Pennsylvania, where online casinos are thriving, serve as compelling examples for Ohio lawmakers. With these states raking in substantial tax revenues from iGaming, the pressure mounts for Ohio to consider legalizing online casinos, possibly in the near future or by 2025.

FanDuel, a North American online gambling powerhouse, unveiled a $1 million donation supporting the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The money, according to the announcement, will help the latter organization build a robust and nationally recognized pipeline for under-represented students.

UNCF is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization and helps young people from under-represented communities become highly qualified college graduates. The organization will use FanDuel’s money to provide financial support to students at 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across Ohio.

This is notably FanDuel’s third donation to the UNCF in three years. Previously, the gambling company provided similar donations to support UNCF’s initiatives in Virginia and Maryland.

The donation will see the organization provide direct aid to help students in a variety of areas. This will notably include technology, housing, food security, tuition and other education-related expenses, the announcement says. In addition, FanDuel will work with the philanthropic organization to recruit students from the schools to join its internship program.

According to the announcement, FanDuel’s decision to support UNCF’s efforts in Ohio celebrates the one-year anniversary of the launch of mobile sports betting in The Buckeye State.

For reference, the 10 colleges that will benefit from the donations include the following:

  • Case Western University
  • Central State University
  • Chamberlain University
  • Franklin University
  • Herzing University-Akron
  • Ohio State University-Newark Campus
  • Union Institute & University
  • Ursuline College
  • Wilberforce University
  • University of Cincinnati-Blue Ash College

UNCF Thanked FanDuel for Its Support

Maurice E. Jenkins, UNCF’s executive vice president and chief fundraising officer, praised FanDuel’s ongoing support, saying that his team truly appreciates the gambling company’s backing. He added that financial and academic support like this is what makes a real difference for HBCUs and their students.

We look forward to continuing our partnership; students benefit so much from internship opportunities.

Maurice E. Jenkins, EVP & CFO, UNCF

FanDuel’s president, Christian Genetski, also commented on the matter, saying that his team continues to strive to make a positive impact in the communities in which the company operates.

As we reflect on our first year of operation in Ohio, we’re proud to continue our partnership with UNCF to support the HBCU community in the state and look forward to supporting hard-working students at institutions across Ohio.

Christian Genetski, president, FanDuel

In other news, FanDuel recently launched a new campaign featuring the NFL star Rob Gronkowski.

Commenting on his LinkedIn page, Cory Brown, manager of problem gambling services at Ohio Casino Control Commission, has confirmed that the regulator is stepping up in providing local players with further safeguards.

Ohio Unflattering in its Commitment to Tackling Problem Gambling

One of the most challenging issues in terms of recovery from gambling addiction is the financial ramifications of reckless spending. This significant weight has been ignored by most healthcare providers worldwide, but Ohio intends to stay at the cutting edge of problem gambling help by addressing the taxing issue headlong.

Following the introduction of Time Out Ohio with the help of Gamban, a software dedicated to excluding players and preventing them from gambling, Ohio has now teamed up with GamFin, a company that specifically focuses on bringing together various professionals who can help better understand how gambling harm works and the financial implications of addiction, along with tested methodology that helps victims and vulnerable consumers recover and maintain their recovery.

People who get help in Ohio because of their gambling addiction will now also have access to financial counselors who can help them tackle this matter by looking into the unique financial circumstances of each problem gambler and charting a way forward. As Brown puts it, “GamFin can help you carry the load.”

Taking on the Most Challenging Aspects of Addiction

GamFin’s staff are trained financial counselors who can act as personal finance subject-matter experts, Brown shared, optimistically adding:

GamFin’s counselors are available both to individual clients and to treatment providers, helping you tackle financial questions and develop solutions to get back on track.

Cory Brown

Ohio is showing a very high commitment to tackling responsible gambling at a time when some jurisdictions, including Washington D.C. are actually cutting the budget allocated to problem gamblers.

In the meantime, Ohio is also trying to minimize harm in other ways, one of which is by restricting the number of advertisements and the connection between promotional offers and non-gambling transactions. This has been criticized by local operators. In truth, the move is unorthodox and Ohio is showing a much greater-than-average involvement in the fate of problem gamblers in the United States, a country which is right now going through a growth spurt

Missouri Tigers Want to Cash In on Their Good Form

The Missouri Tigers finished the regular NCAAF season with a 10-2 record. Their only losses happened to Georgia and LSU. In both of those games, Missouri was the underdog.

Throughout the season, Eliah Drinkwitz’s boys were good both offensively and defensively. They did concede 49 points against LSU, but Missouri’s defensive team kept all the other opponents to no more than 31 points.

Still, if there’s something their fans will remember the 2023 college season for, it’s Missouri’s super-productive offense. Their average was 34.08 PPG, which is pretty respectable.

They got to such a high number thanks to some brilliant performance of their quarterback Brady Cook who threw for 3,189 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2023. His favorite target was wide receiver Luther Burden who recorded 1,197 receiving yards and eight touchdowns this season.

Then, there’s running back Cody Schrader who’s the recipient of this year’s Burlsworth Trophy for the best college football player who started his career as a walk-on. Schrader gained 1,489 yards for the Tigers, scoring 13 TDs along the way.

With these guys on the field of AT&T Stadium, Mizz should have no worries about scoring. But can their defense handle the Buckeyes’ offense?

2023 Cotton Bowl Classic is Ohio State’s First Game Without Kyle McCord

After going 11-1 in the regular season and finishing second in the Big Ten (East) conference, just behind Michigan, the Ohio State Buckeyes were the No. 2 team in the nation. But then, their quarterback Kyle McCord decided to enter the transfer portal. The result of his decision was that his team plummeted to the No. 7 position in the rankings.

The obvious question is can they hope without him? McCord was crucial for their success in 2023 and with backup QB Devin Brown, they shouldn’t hope to achieve much passing-wise. Sure, they’ve still got some really good receivers on the roster, most notably, Marvin Harrison Jr. who recorded 1,211 yards in 2023, scoring 14 touchdowns.

However, in the 2023 Cotton Bowl Classic, their offense will probably have to work harder on running the ball. This tactic might not result in a lot of touchdowns, which is why we think it’s their defense that may decide the outcome of this game.

If Ohio State’s defensive team does a good job on December 29, the Buckeyes are going to win. It’s as simple as that!

Missouri Tigers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Prediction

We think Mizz will win the 2023 Cotton Bowl Classic. They’re a decent team in 2023 and with the problems the Buckeyes have on the offensive team, the Tigers look destined to beat them for the first time in decades.

Pick: Missouri Tigers (-140)

This initiative is a part of the Ohio Lottery’s “Time Out Ohio” program designed to assist individuals grappling with gambling problems. The most significant development is expanding the state’s self-exclusion program to include online wagering, significantly bolstering its scope and effectiveness. This latest development highlights Ohio’s efforts to balance stakeholder interests with player safety.

The Software Represents a Significant Advancement

Expanding its support for responsible gaming, the Ohio Lottery Commission now introduces a new software solution from the safe gambling organization Gamban to prevent individuals from placing bets on various devices. This initiative is a natural evolution of the Lottery Commission’s self-exclusion program, which currently extends to physical casinos and other specific durations.

“Time Out Ohio” offers self-exclusion options for individuals, ranging from one year to a lifetime ban. Players who breach the self-exclusion agreement by entering a casino may face penalties, including forfeiting gambling chips or slot tickets, being forced to leave the premises, and facing potential criminal trespass charges.

The newly introduced Gamban software will block access to popular betting sites like FanDuel, Unibet, Bally’s, and WagerScore in the US for one year. It will be readily available at no cost to individuals suffering from gambling harm, reflecting Ohio’s proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by the rapidly growing mobile gambling landscape.

Ohio’s Balanced Approach Should Serve as an Example

Amanda Blackford, director of operations and Responsible Gaming at the Ohio Lottery Commission, noted that Gamban would be invaluable for individuals struggling with online gambling, as its protection includes illegal gambling platforms beyond the Commission’s jurisdiction. Gamban co-founder Matt Zarb-Cousin agreed with this sentiment, lauding Ohio’s proactive attitude.

We hope other states will follow the lead of Ohio, which has been incredibly forward-thinking at a time when mobile sports betting across the US is growing rapidly.

Matt Zarb-Cousin, Gamban co-founder

This newest initiative aligns with Ohio’s efforts to protect consumers while encouraging a thriving and sustainable gambling industry. November saw the Buckeye State introduce new restrictions on gambling advertisements, promotional offers, and bonuses. Meanwhile, a new bill proposed cutting gambling operator gross receipts tax from 20% to a more industry-friendly 10%, highlighting this balanced approach.

The new update to “Time Out Ohio” represents a significant stride in harnessing technology to provide critical support and protection for individuals dealing with gambling addiction, not only within the legal gambling spectrum but also across unauthorized and potentially harmful online platforms. Other states should follow this example, prioritizing customer safety without stifling industry growth.

In a move aimed at revitalizing Ohio’s sports betting industry, State Senator Niraj Antani, a Miamisburg Republican eyeing a congressional run, has recently introduced legislation to significantly reduce the state tax imposed on sports betting operators.

Senator Antani’s Bill 190 Ignites Controversy Over Ohio’s Sports Betting Revenue

The original tax rate on sports betting operators in Ohio was 10% when the state’s sports betting program kicked off on January 1 of this year. However, during the summer, lawmakers opted to double the tax rate through the state budget, a decision now being challenged by Senator Antani’s proposed legislation, reported Cleveland.com.

Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, had advocated for the tax hike, expressing concerns over what he deemed as excessive advertising by operators. He highlighted instances of regulatory fines levied against major players such as DraftKings and Barstool Sportsbook for violations, including mailing advertisements to individuals below the legal betting age and hosting events that ran afoul of advertising rules.

Since the introduction of the increased tax, Ohioans have wagered an impressive $5.2 billion on sports, with $4.5 billion returned as winnings. The tax hike has also prompted a cultural shift, with professional and collegiate leagues, as well as sports media, increasingly embracing legal sports betting.

Critics Sound Alarm as Ohio Weighs Impact of Senate Bill 190

The financial implications of Senate Bill 190 remain uncertain, with the Legislative Service Commission yet to provide a revenue estimate. However, the proposed tax cut raises questions about potential impacts on the state’s revenue, as Ohio has already collected nearly $102 million in tax revenue from sportsbooks between January and October.

Senator Antani criticized the decision to raise the sports betting tax through the budget, arguing that it negatively influences the emerging market. He contended that the increased tax not only affects sportsbooks but also trickles down to bettors through less favorable odds and fewer promotional offers.

Antani, however, was not the only critic. Other proponents argued that the higher tax may deter operators, making Ohio less attractive to the sports betting industry. Critics, including former Ohio Rep. Dann Dodd and Americans for Tax Reform, warned that the measure could drive existing brands out of the market, potentially leading to significant economic consequences for Ohio.

As of March 2023, 29 states in the US have legalized sports betting, with tax rates generally falling between 10% and 15%. However, there is considerable variation, ranging from a low of 6.75% in Iowa to a high of 51% in Rhode Island, highlighting the ongoing debate over the optimal tax rate to balance industry growth and government revenue.

The Buckeyes Dreaming of Their 1st Win in “The Game” in This Decade

The Buckeyes lost the last two games against their arch-rivals. They’ve been without a win over the Wolverines since 2019, but maybe this Saturday is the day when the wait ends?

A thing that’s giving their fans some hope that they can pull it off is that Ohio State’s defense has been phenomenal in 2023. These guys are No. 1 in the nation when it comes to pass defense. That said, the Buckeyes should be able to put on a good defensive performance at Ann Arbor, but what about their offense?

Their starting quarterback Kyle McCord has seriously upped his game over the last couple of weeks. He’s got 22 touchdown passes to his name in the 2023 NCAAF season, with 10 of those happening in his last three games. Further, he’s without a single interception in the last two games.

McCord’s favorite target in 2023 has been Marvin Harrison Jr., who’s scored a total of 13 passing TDs this season, five of which happened in the three games Ohio State has played this month.

When it comes to Ohio State’s running game, TreVeyon Henderson has been in the spotlight. The running back has made 118 carries this season for 794 yards and 10 touchdowns. A great thing about Ohio State’s running game in 2023 is that it’s not just about one player. In addition to Henderson, five other Buckeyes have scored a rushing TD this season.

Problems Keep Pilling on for Michigan

Michigan’s head coach Jim Harbaugh is suspended by the Big Ten Conference and won’t be there to lead the Wolverines in “The Game” on Saturday. He won’t be there on the field, but he’ll probably get the players ready for the crucial game.

Unfortunately for Michigan, the absence of their coach isn’t the only problem they’re facing. Their starting quarterback is also struggling with fitness. J.J. McCarthy missed the previous game due to injury, so there are worries that he might not be back to his top level by Saturday.

Further, his colleague from Michigan’s offensive team, wide receiver Roman Wilson, picked up an injury last week, for which he’ll miss the 2023 Buckeyes vs. Wolverines game.

There might be some problems with their defense as well. Even though they conceded the least number of points of all Big Ten teams, they did get outplayed a couple of times last weekend by the Maryland offense.

Taulia Tagovailoa and the Terrapins scored 24 points against the Wolverines – the highest number of points this team’s conceded in 2023.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines Prediction

The NCAAF odds are in favor of the Wolverines, but we think the Buckeyes are going to cause an upset. Everything seems to be lining up in their favor right now, making the 2023 Ohio State vs. Michigan game an opportunity they mustn’t miss.

Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes

The $1-million Ohio Lottery prize is an annuity that is paid as $50,000 a year for 20 years (before taxes). However, Phillips preferred the $500,000 cash payout option. After taxes, the Columbiana County player is set to receive $360,000.

According to the Ohio Lottery’s official website, there are three $1/year prizes remaining in the lottery. Meanwhile, there are 82 second-tier $50,000/year prizes (such as the one Phillips won) remaining. The lottery also reports that there are 194 $50,000 prizes and multiple smaller prizes still available.

Speaking of the Ohio Lottery, the operator recently expanded its partnership with the leading supplier Scientific Games. Under the agreement, the latter company agreed to continue providing the lottery company with scratch-off games management and SCiQ retail point-of-sale technology.

For reference, Scientific Games’ SCiQ retail ecosystem is currently deployed at over 800 Ohio Lottery shops across the state.

A Lucky Man Recently Won the $360M Mega Millions Jackpot

And speaking of jackpots, a lucky Texan player won the $360 million Mega Millions jackpot a few days ago. The player got the 12/24/46/57/66 combination right and also nailed the Mega Ball number (22). As a result, the Mega Millions jackpot was reset back to $20 million. The prize quickly increased to $50 million as more and more people tried to replicate the earlier winner’s success.

Earlier this month, the Powerball jackpot increased to a staggering $1.04 billion. This is notably the fourth largest figure the Powerball jackpot has ever reached in the history of the game. A week ago, this same jackpot stood at $835 million.

The initiative seeking to promote responsible gambling among gamblers in Ohio, Ohio for Responsible Gambling, confirmed that an increase is observed in the number of people calling for help regarding problem gambling. On Tuesday, the organization revealed that the number of calls from people in need of help with problem gambling has increased by 70% year-to-date when compared to the corresponding period last year. The increase once again alerted clinical professionals about the dangers of gambling-related harm.

The latest announcement comes at a time when sports betting is blooming, not only in Ohio but in neighboring states as well. The worrying statistics emerged ahead of National Suicide Prevention Month, featuring initiatives this September. In light of this, Ohio for Responsible Gambling once again reminded players, their families, as well as health experts to be on the lookout for early signs of problem gambling.

Spotting the Early Signs of Problem Gambling Is Crucial

Derek Longmeier, the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio’s executive director, acknowledged that amid the growth of the popularity of sports betting, people need to understand the importance of setting limits. He outlined that detecting excessive gambling early is crucial, explaining that behavioral changes such as betting more than you can afford or seeking for the excitement of wagering big sums can be counted as red flags.

With sports betting now legal, we need everyone to understand the risks and learn about setting limits.

Derek Longmeier, executive director, Problem Gambling Network of Ohio

Additionally, Longmeier said that people affected by at-risk, or problem gambling may hide or lie about how much money or time they spend gambling, engage in loans or cut costs for vital expenses like food or rent and use them for gambling. Another red flag could also be a sudden drop in work performance, warns the executive director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio.

Research tells us that of those experiencing a gambling disorder, up to 38% will consider suicide.

Tony Coder, executive director of the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation

Tony Coder, the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation’s executive director, spoke about the clear connection between gambling activities and mental health. Citing research, he said that people affected by problem gambling are more vulnerable to suicide, with up to 38% considering such actions. Coder noted that this percentage is the highest out of any form of addiction. Finally, he encouraged anyone experiencing problem gambling to ask for treatment and support.

A few days after launching a new product in Pennsylvania, Scientific Games, a leader in the provision of lottery solutions, has announced an extension of its successful deal with the Ohio Lottery. According to the announcement, the former party will continue to supply the latter company with scratch-off games management and SCiQ retail point-of-sale technology.

The two companies, the announcement says, have extended their deal for an additional two deals. The partnership between Scientific Games and the Ohio Lottery originally began in 2019, proving to be a resounding success for both parties. Currently, Scientific Games deploys the SCiQ retail ecosystem at over 800 Ohio Lottery shops.

Thanks to its deal with Scientific Games, the Ohio Lottery’s retailers have access to innovative technology that allows them to easily manage and sell scratch-off games to their customers. The partnership has also helped the lottery launch its products at major convenience store chains, making its products more accessible to Buckeyes.

Scientific Games also helps the lottery improve its performance by providing it with portfolio management and game design services, data analytics, retail sales and marketing support, logistics and licensed brand services.

Scientific Games Thanked the Ohio Lottery for Its Trust

The Ohio Lottery notably ranks among the 20 best lotteries in the world in terms of scratch-off game performance, as outlined in La Fleur’s 2023 World Almanac. With the help of Scientific games, the Ohio Lottery’s scratch-off sales skyrocketed from $1.6 billion in fiscal year 2019 to $2.3 billion in fiscal year 2023. In addition, the lottery enjoys an above-average growth rate compared to many of its competitors.

John Schulz, Scientific Games’ president of Americas and global instant products, thanked the lottery for its continued trust in Scientific Games and its solutions. Schulz added that the Ohio Lottery was one of the pioneers of the SCiQ ecosystem at retail.

We thank the Ohio Lottery for having the vision to partner with us on instant games to optimize the product portfolio and generate maximum revenues for education.

The reliability of Scientific Games is internationally recognized as shown by its multiple deals with leading lottery companies. The supplier was also one of the first to receive a responsible gaming supplier certification from the World Lottery Association.

Earlier this month, Scientific Games announced that it will replace Lotto New Zealand’s core and online gaming systems. Earlier still, the company also introduced a new central system to the Latvian Lottery.
