As indicated, the analysts estimate that mobile players will bring the largest handle to the online poker operations from 2024 to 2030. More specifically, the study expects that smart phones will be the vehicle most frequently used to place bets online in the near future. The estimate is based on the mobile-friendly poker games being increasingly preferred among the poker player community for their convenient and engaging features appealing to worldwide players.

Last week, the Irish police, also known as Gardaí, confirmed it renewed its appeal for information related to the mysterious and unexpected disappearance of a 41-year-old poker player dating back to 2019. The recent request reignited the efforts in resolving the missing person’s case that involved Jon Jonsson, a poker player from Iceland who disappeared on February 9, 2019. The poker player was last seen around 11 AM on that day in Whitehall.

The latest request for the Gardaí comes after anonymous correspondence was received regarding the case. The Irish police urged the authors of the correspondence to disclose more details. “The Garda investigation team are appealing to the author(s) of those correspondences to make direct contact with them,” reads a statement released by garda disclosed by the Irish Independent. The police authorities added: “Any contact will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.”

In February 2019, Jonsson, who was 41 at the time, checked into the Bonnington Hotel in Dublin. The Icelandic poker player arrived on February 9, ahead of a poker tournament he was expecting to participate in. Jonsson had planned a 10-day vacation for himself and his fiancée. Yet, on the same day he arrived at Bonnington Hotel, he walked out and was never seen again.

According to a report released by The Irish Mirror, Gardaí are now considering that the 41-year-old poker player may have been killed somewhere in Dublin Park. Citing sources, the publication suggests that Jonsson may have been murdered after losing a significant amount of money while playing poker in Dublin. Reportedly, the poker player arranged a meeting in the park that turned into a violent encounter and ultimately resulted in his death. Still, it’s important to mention that garda is yet to officially confirm if this version is correct.

Gardaí Searches Areas in Santry Park

After receiving the anonymous communication last week, this week, the Irish police initiated a search in a section of Santry Park. The aforementioned area was secured by law enforcement while K9 and underwater units investigating the surroundings were dispatched.

The location where garda is currently searching is approximately 2 miles from the Bonnington Hotel where Jonsson was last seen alive on February 9, 2019. The result of the latest search is yet to be confirmed.

This mostly came with no strings attached from the government, other than preparing the necessary paperwork and making sure that certain standards for responsible gambling and underage gambling have been observed.

Poker Machines Now Need a RG Officer to Tend to Customers

Yet, a wave of regulatory changes across the state will now expect pubs and other venues that have at least 20 poker machines to a more rigorous standard whereby they also employ Responsible Gambling Officers whose purpose will be to determine whether a patron is at risk of harm.

Venues that have more than 20 poker machines will only employ a single such person, but if the poker machines exceed 100, then additional staff will have to take over. There is a grace period still, as venues will be given time to adapt, and not least – the measure is not going to come into effect until July 1, 2024.

Once it does, businesses will have further time to make sure that they are compliant with the law. “The introduction of Responsible Gambling Officers is the next important step in supporting people who may be experiencing gambling harm,” has been vastly welcomed by responsible gambling groups and advocates, including Clubs NSW, an industry body, that said it was very much for the proposed changes.

The group’s CEO, Rebecca Riant, said that she was very much for minimizing harm and that the 1,200 members of the trade group were prepared to comply with the measures as necessary to ensure that patrons are protected and out of harm’s way.

The measure does put a financial burden on businesses that will now have to train and find qualified individuals as the nation, and New South Wales in particular, is responding to a growing need for a more scrupulous approach towards responsible gambling.

New South Wales Toughens Measures on Gambling

More measures are forthcoming. Some, such as the removal of gambling inducements from physical signs outside of pubs and clubs, have also come into effect, but others, including the restriction of AU$500 ($330) input into a poker machine are to take effect later.

Australia is also flirting with the introduction of a mandatory cashless payment option, which is so far stuck between different trials, and which has caused rather more indignation than other measures. Clubs have spoken out against the measure arguing that the government equates their clientele to criminals, and raised data standards.

Clubs have come under a lot of scrutiny recently, with some penalized for having ATMs next to their gaming rooms.

$12.5 Million GTD Venom’s Final Table, Live on Twitch

$12.5 Million GTD Venom, which will mark the biggest online poker tournament that US players have witnessed in the past decade and a half, will benefit from live commentary from industry pros.

Other poker guests will join producer, broadcaster, and poker commentator Justin Kelly in making live comments during the tournament’s Final Table on ACR Poker’s official Twitch channel on Wednesday, May 1 starting at 4:05 pm ET.

10537 players claimed the offer this month

The event will kickstart on Sunday, April 14, which will mark the first of five Day 1 options

Day 2 will be on Monday, April 29 while Day 3 will be on Tuesday, April 30. Players who

qualify for Day 2 are not allowed to sign up for any other Day 1 flight. The tournament does not offer the option to play a separate Day 1 after a player has qualified to obtain a bigger stack.

The buy-in has been set to $2,650 but poker players eager to participate will be given more affordable alternatives to grab a seat, including the Beast and Step tourneys and the Venom Fever satellites

Multiple Millionaires to Be Crowned

The tournament had its debut in 2019 with a $5 million guaranteed prize pool, followed by twice as much just two years later. Now, ACR Poker has announced they are “about to do the unimaginable, unthinkable, unmissable!”

This year’s winner of the Venom’s 5th Anniversary tournament will go home with a guaranteed prize of at least $1 million

The US poker pro scooped up close to $1,578,000 after he navigated through the Final Table where he sat next to other iconic names in the industry including ACR Pro John Van Fleet aka Apestyles or high-stakes pro player Chris Hunichen aka 2Rich2Care

ACR Pro Chris Moneymaker commented on the upcoming tournament, saying that the $12.5 million that is up for grabs and the numerous qualification opportunities “for as little as $0 through freerolls and satellites” make it the best time to take a seat at the tables.

Earlier in the month, ACR Poker announced the eighth edition of its Venom PKO tournament.

A coalition of Victorian councils is urging the state government to overhaul a tax minimization scheme for poker machine venues, asserting that the current system allows venues to exaggerate their community benefits.

The councils are particularly concerned about venues pledging additional payments to communities as part of their bids for more poker machines, arguing that these initiatives do not counterbalance the detrimental effects of gambling harm, reported The Guardian.

Their grievances revolve around a tax break scheme that grants Victorian clubs financial benefits if they allocate 8.33% of gambling revenue to community initiatives. However, investigations reveal that a substantial portion of this money is directed toward the clubs’ own operating costs and upgrades, masquerading as a “community benefit.”

Ranka Rasic, the mayor of Brimbank council, expressed frustration and disappointment, emphasizing the acute gambling harm experienced by her constituents. Rasic insists that the state government needs to confront its dependence on gambling venues for income to resolve the persisting issue.

In October, it was revealed that Australians have set a concerning record, with losses from poker machines reaching AUD 14.5 billion ($9.25 billion) in the last financial year, a significant increase from the previous year.

Victoria’s Councils Unite for Poker Machine Reform

Last month, all councils in Victoria collectively urged the government to promptly review the scheme to ensure that losses from gambling are genuinely reinvested into the community. In May, councils advocated for redefining “community benefit” to ensure that gambling profits are shared with legitimate philanthropic organizations or charities, rather than being channeled into the clubs’ self-serving upgrades.

The push for reform is spearheaded by a subset of mayors, primarily concerned about the disproportionate harm inflicted by poker machines on socioeconomically disadvantaged communities where losses are significantly higher.

The Greater Dandenong city council, located on Melbourne’s south-eastern fringe, stands out as one of the most culturally diverse and disadvantaged in Australia. With an average loss of $801 per adult to gambling annually, the council is at the forefront of the call for reform. This rate is almost nine times higher than the losses in Boroondara, one of the state’s more privileged areas.

An ongoing parliamentary inquiry has highlighted concerns raised by local governments about applicants failing to deliver on promises to fund community activities.

The councils’ call for reform underscores the need to address the exploitative practices of poker machine-operating clubs, ensuring that tax breaks genuinely benefit the community rather than serving as a cover for self-serving agendas. The state government’s response to these demands remains awaited, with gaming minister Melissa Horne yet to provide comment on the matter.

A strike by 3,700 casino workers in Detroit has led to the closure of poker rooms at two high-profile casino properties, MotorCity Casino and MGM Grand Detroit. The strike comprises employees from five different unions and has inadvertently bolstered Canadian gambling tourism, as the nearest fully operational venue is just a short border crossing away.

Protests Are Causing Significant Disruptions

Poker rooms at MotorCity Casino and MGM Grand Detroit have been temporarily closed following the strike. An update on MotorCity Casino’s website informed visitors of the poker room’s closure. Similarly, a sign at MGM Grand Detroit notified guests that the poker room was temporarily unavailable. However, Hollywood Casino in Greektown confirmed that the strike had not affected their offerings.

The protests, affecting crucial positions like dealers, food and beverage staff, and engineers, stem from demands for improved healthcare, higher wages, and a return to pre-pandemic staffing levels. Negotiations between the Detroit Casino Council and the casino operators have been ongoing since September, but the two parties have unfortunately made little progress.

Detroit casino workers need a job that respects our health and our future. We now have to stand up and reset the relationship between us and the companies.

Detroit Casino Council strike flier

The strike launched when the three-year extension to the original five-year contract, agreed upon during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, expired on Tuesday. Workers argue that revenue has now returned to pre-pandemic levels, especially with the inclusion of iGaming throughout Michigan. Poker enthusiasts and staff will face an uncertain period until the affected parties reach an agreement.

Caesars Windsor Attracts Americans with Comprehensive Casino Offering

While the three casinos affected by the strike will remain open, the protests have caused noticeable disruptions. Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI), has offered Detroit bettors an alternative, inviting them to take a short trip across the border to Caesars Windsor, a world-class gaming option free of labor disputes.

Orr emphasized that the Canadian offering provided a quality gaming experience without crossing picket lines, making it a suitable alternative for US casino-goers who wish to avoid the Detroit labor strike. Caesars Windsor manager of PR and communications Susanne Tompkins was also excited to welcome foreign visitors, highlighting the venue’s world-class amenities.

Caesars Windsor is our number one tourist attraction. We’ve got it all… world-class gaming, a 5,000-seat Coliseum with A-List entertainment, gaming, and, of course, restaurants.

Susanne Tompkins, Caesars Windsor manager of PR and communications

While the strike’s future remains uncertain, the impact on Detroit’s poker rooms is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the casino industry amid calls for better worker conditions and the return to pre-pandemic norms. Unlike Nevada residents, Michiganders have a viable alternative nearby, exacerbating the pressure for casinos to reach an agreement with protesters.

In an unexpected twist, two bitter poker rivals set aside their differences to expose a social engineering scam that exploited their mutual dislike. Benjamin “Blank Check Ben” Lee and “Wes Side” Wesley Fei found themselves embroiled in a complex web of deception. Their journey from rivals to allies in uncovering this elaborate scheme serves as a cautionary tale on the dangers of online fraud.

The Attacker Employed Clever Tactics

The story began on 4 September when a WordPress website titled “Uncovering Wesley” emerged. It claimed to be authored by someone who had fallen victim to a $250,000 cryptocurrency scam involving Wesley Fei in 2022. The blog also alleged that Wesley had sent individuals to burglarize the accuser’s home.

Benjamin Lee, an outspoken rival of Wesley, then received a message from the accuser via Instagram. The victim intended to expose Wesley’s alleged wrongdoings but claimed he first needed financial support as he had supposedly lost his entire life’s savings. Initially, Lee trusted his instincts and declined to get involved.

Lee’s Resistance Gradually Eroded as He Sent More Funds

A few months later, the accuser approached Lee again, revealing that Wesley had offered him $35,000 to unveil Lee as the “instigator of a character assassination campaign.” Concerned about the potential damage to his reputation, Lee decided to wire the other person $2,500, believing he was also an innocent victim.

The situation only escalated from there. The alleged victim presented himself as Russell Thamer, a London-based financial recruiter, and demanded more money. He offered evidence of Wesley’s involvement in immigration fraud for $100,000. Despite initial hesitation, Lee relented. However, Thamer pressed on, claiming he was facing threats, possibly from associates of Wesley.

He manipulated me with a victim story that exploited my sympathy and strong hatred for injustice. He also took advantage of my personal dislike for Wesley.

Benjamin “Blank Check Ben” Lee

Fearing for his safety, Lee hired a security firm and transferred an additional $28,000 in cryptocurrency to Thamer. However, the poker pro had grown suspicious, deciding to share his experiences with Ryan Feldman, co-owner of Hustler Casino Live. As Lee and Wesley compared notes, the two players discovered they had been manipulated against each other and that the supposed evidence did not exist.

The Scammer Is Still at Large

Thamer had attempted similar tactics on Wesley, who fortunately did not fall victim to the scam. In response to his role in the deception, Lee publicly apologized to Wesley. The two players’ shared ordeal brought them closer, and they have since put aside their differences and forged a budding friendship as viewers eagerly await their return on Hustler Casino Live.

I have already twice apologized to Wesley for my part in all this. His reputation has suffered for no reason other than that I was gullible enough to be manipulated by a fraudster.

Benjamin “Blank Check Ben” Lee

According to Lee’s latest tweets, Thamer continued to blackmail him, threatening to increase incriminating information. This ongoing story presents a stark reminder of the dangers of online fraud and social engineering, proving that nobody is safe from manipulation. However, the events also demonstrate the importance of vigilance and collaboration in uncovering and combating such fraudulent schemes.

Star Entertainment Group’s recent bans on poker players don’t sit well with many professionals. The Australian Poker Schedule, a website that allows enthusiasts to keep track of upcoming events, has launched a petition against Star’s allegedly “unjustified” measures.

Craig Abernethy, founder of the Australian Poker Schedule, addresses the issue in the petition, saying that in around 12 months, the casino company has banned more than half a dozen of Australia’s best poker players.

Some of the recipients of allegedly unjustified bans include Alex Lynskey, Jarred Graham, Hun Wei Lee, Najeem Ajez, Rehman Kassam and Chris Zenonos. These players, among others, are currently unable to enter Star’s properties, lest they risk intervention from the police.

Not only have these players practiced and honed their poker skills, built their careers around poker and performed at the highest level of competition for more than a decade, but they have exemplary and long-standing reputations and are highly respected among the poker community including some internationally recognized.

Craig Abernethy, founder, Australian Poker Schedule

The worst part, Abernethy says, is that Star Entertainment never provided any details on the reasoning behind the bans. When contacted, the company reminded the disgruntled players that “it is not required to provide reasons” for its decisions.

Abernethy Asks Fans to Stand Up

The biggest problem stemming from the bans is that the banned players are now essentially excluded from the World Poker Tour Australia because of the World Poker Tour’s exclusive partnership with Star Entertainment Group.

As a result, the aforementioned players will lose the opportunity to play at the prestigious event without even knowing why they have been banned. According to Abernethy, the “scariest thing” is that this can happen to any poker player at any time.

Australian Poker Schedule’s founder emphasized that Star’s actions are worrying and that players should be wary of the company. He asked the poker community and their friends to stand up against Star Entertainment, which he accused of being “cruel, arrogant and bullish.”

The petition has 527 signatures as of the time of this writing.

Casino.org later spoke with Abernethy on the matter. Abernethy told the news outlet that Star Entertainment likely flags the activity of poker players who transfer large sums of money as suspicious, believing it to be related to money laundering.

Considering Star’s recent regulatory trouble, it is possible that the company wants to be extra safe when implementing its remediation measures.

Meanwhile, Richmond accrued $4.6m from 97 machines located at the Wantirna Club in Melbourne’s eastern side, resulting in an average of $47,573 per machine. St Kilda fetched $1.8m from its 83 machines at its Moorabbin venue.

Essendon stood out, collecting $14.7m from its 190 machines across two venues. Advocacy group, No Pokies at Essendon, pointed out this as the highest total since 2007.

No Pokies at Essendon President Mike Read said the club a lot of work to both on-field and off-field, and was extremely disappointed with their continued profiting off poker machines.

“In recent years we have seen AFL clubs rush to get out of the pokies business, recognising the immense social harm they cause,” Read said.

“Essendon, instead, points to the revenue that gaming machines provide the football club, as though yet another disappointing season on-field justifies the continued damage that the predatory machines inflict.”

The No Pokies at Essendon initiative is endorsed by Zoe Daniel, an independent MP and dedicated Bombers fan. Daniel voiced her concerns, saying football clubs shouldn’t be attempting to profit off fans via electronic gaming machines. s

An Essendon representative, however, defended the club’s reliance on pokies, noting, “In the aftermath of Covid, we still need the revenue from our gaming machines. Any major decisions regarding our future venues will undergo thorough scrutiny by the board.”

Interestingly, all four clubs — Richmond, St Kilda, Essendon, and Carlton — are affiliated with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation’s Love the Game program, an initiative focusing on educating the youth about gambling risks.

Carol Bennet, CEO of the Alliance for Gambling Reform, challenged their association with the program given their substantial gambling earnings.

“If you’re profiting significantly from your poker machines, you can definitely be selective with your sponsors,” Bennet said.

Bennet suggested that if these clubs truly cared about their performance and community, they’d emulate teams like Collingwood, Melbourne, Geelong, and the Western Bulldogs who’ve abandoned pokies and secured seven premierships combined since doing so.

North Melbourne was notably the first Victorian AFL club to abandon pokies back in 2008. In 2022, Hawthorn followed suit, selling its two poker machine venues. Collingwood also exited the industry in 2018, with its former president, Eddie McGuire, terming it “a sound business move.”

Australia has some of the most stringent gambling laws in the world, with it one of the few countries yet to legalise online casinos, which has caused many millions of dollars to be sent to offshore gambling sites.

This means authorities have little idea about the money spent playing online pokies, with several notable AFL players in the past admitting they gambling heavily online during their careers.

Australia does have a legal sports betting industry, with the AFL one of the most popular wagering events at online bookmakers.

So, you just started playing poker or you have some experience but want to know when to make the ultimate decision – To Go ALL IN.

Well, let’s highlight one thing from the start. There isn’t a certain strategy or pair of cards that will guarantee you a win in poker.

Going All In is a decision that you must consider under many circumstances not just your starting hand.

With that said, there are certain cards that will increase your winning chances and might be a good idea to go all in.

Poker isn’t just about luck; it’s a tactical dance where choosing the right moments to go all-in can determine your success.

Let’s check the best starting poker hands and take a deep dive into the best moments to go all in.

The Dynamic Power of Starting Hands

At the beginning of each round, you’re dealt two hole cards that set the stage for your poker journey. Some combinations are like hidden gems, offering the potential for robust hands that can tilt the odds in your favor. These are the starting hands that poker players yearn for, as they hold the potential to make or break the game.

The Best Starting Hands

A Closer Look: In the realm of Texas Hold’em, a pair of aces, often referred to as “pocket rockets,” takes center stage. This duo is the best of starting hands, boasting the highest potential for creating a strong hand right off the bat. Picture yourself with a pair of aces – it’s like holding the golden ticket to the poker kingdom.

Another potent starting hand is the pair of kings, lovingly known as “cowboys.” This powerful pair can dominate the table, especially when the community cards align to bring additional kings or supportive cards. Think about having two kings in your hand; you’re armed with royalty in a strategic battle for supremacy.

This means that any two-picture starting hand cards will increase your chances of winning.

However, getting two of the same card doesn’t happen too often, but this doesn’t mean that the other hands are weak. For example, starting out with Ace-King, King-Queen, and Ace-Jack will also set you in a good position.

Types of Starting Hands

When it comes to the exhilarating game of Texas Hold’em poker, there’s a nifty trick up its sleeve – sorting all those hands into two distinct camps: suited and offsuit.

Suited Hands: When Cards Match Like Peanut Butter and Jelly Suited Hands are like those perfect pairs that just click. They’re made up of two cards that happen to share the same suit. Think of them as two peas in a pod. For instance, K♥ 10♥, A♠ K♠, J♣ 8♣, and 10♦ 7♦ are all suited hands. It’s like they’re dressed in the same attire, and this can add some serious boost to your gameplay.

Offsuit Hands: A Mix-and-Match Affair On the flip side, we’ve got the offsuit hands, where two cards from different suits come together for a bit of a dance. It’s like mixing and matching your wardrobe – a bit of this, a bit of that.

Take examples like K♦ 7♣, Q♥ 9♦, A♠ 6♦, and 10♦ 8♥. These hands don’t share the same suit, which brings a whole different vibe to the table and can lead to a powerful hand.

When to Go All In

The real mastery lies in knowing when to deploy this powerhouse starting hands with an all-in move. Timing is your secret weapon.

Opting for an all-in right from the start can catch opponents off-guard, but it could also signal that you possess an exceptional hand, potentially forcing out those with weaker holdings. However, if you encounter an aggressive raise before the flop, it’s time to reconsider the invincibility of your aces.

Reading the Table

The ability to determine the right time to go all-in hinges on your prowess in reading the table dynamics. Are your opponent’s playing conservatively or assertively? Do they appear jittery or confident?

These nuances can provide valuable insights into the strength of their hands, guiding your decisions on when to make that high-stakes move.

Bluffing in Poker

Starting out strong (going all-in) doesn’t mean that the player holds high cards. In most cases, this is a bluff strategy to scare out the competition.

All-in moments are not only about the cards you hold; they also involve projecting confidence and making well-timed plays that disorient your rivals.

Sometimes, even when your starting hand isn’t the absolute best, a calculated all-in bet can cast doubt on the minds of others. This blend of intuition, observation, and poker psychology can turn a mere bluff into a strategic masterstroke.

Final Words

As we mentioned before, your starting cards in poker don’t always suggest that you are going to win the hand. However, they do increase your winning chances.

With that said, it is very important to observe everything that is happening around you, and not focus only on your starting hands.
