In the wake of a cyber breach at the renowned Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, the FBI and local law enforcement have launched a thorough investigation, shedding light on the escalating concerns surrounding cybersecurity within the casino realm. This incident, which led to a significant disruption in services, amplifies the vulnerabilities prevalent in the industry and underscores the urgent need for heightened security measures

Casino Del Sol Responds Swiftly to Cybersecurity Breach, Maintains Core Services

Upon uncovering unauthorized attempts to breach its network, Casino Del Sol promptly took action, notifying the public through its official channels and swiftly suspending various services, including casino credit, cash transactions, and ATM services, among others, reported BNN Breaking

While essential gambling services like poker, slot machines, and table games remained operational, the disruption affected critical functions, necessitating immediate attention to restore normalcy.

In a bid to mitigate the fallout from the breach, the casino resorted to cash-only transactions at its dining establishments and bars, ensuring minimal disruption to guest experiences. Despite these measures, guests encountered inconveniences such as malfunctioning electronic room keys, prompting staff to assist with manual access to rooms—a testament to the widespread impact of the breach on day-to-day operations.

Such incidents not only undermine consumer trust but also pose significant financial risks, as evidenced by the estimated $100 million cost incurred by MGM Resorts International following a similar cyberattack in 2023.

Casino Del Sol Apologizes, Highlights Urgent Need for Cybersecurity Measures

In response to the breach, Casino Del Sol apologized for any disruptions caused to its patrons and reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing guest safety and security. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the evolving nature of cyber threats and the imperative of proactive measures to safeguard sensitive data and maintain operational continuity.

At the beginning of February, cybersecurity expert Dan Lohrmann warned of the persistent threat of cyberattacks targeting casinos, citing the incidents involving major gambling operators like MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment.

Despite efforts to mitigate risks, the industry remains vulnerable, with Lohrmann emphasizing the importance of proactive monitoring and strategic action to reduce the likelihood of breaches and ransomware attacks.

Lohrmann’s insights highlighted the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures across the gambling sector in response to escalating cyber threats. As authorities delve deeper into the investigation of the cyber breach at Casino Del Sol, the broader implications of the attack reverberate across the casino industry, prompting a reevaluation of existing security protocols and crisis management strategies.

Paraguay’s competitions regulator, the CONACOM, will investigate the recent sports betting tender to see if it was indeed unfair, as many people claim. According to the authority, the competition was set in a way that favored the local participant.

The tender to operate Paraguay’s national sports betting franchise was launched last year. The competition was run and overseen by the Conajzar, Paraguay’s official gambling regulator. However, many participants believed that the Conajzar played favorites by making the terms much more favorable to the Paraguayan participant.

DARUMA SAM, a local sports betting company that operates retail properties across the Gran Asunción province, was allegedly favored by the Conajzar, according to many competitors. As reported by SBCNews, the CONACOM agreed that the regulator’s conditions were not fair and noted that it had failed to inform foreign competitors of the tender fees and minimum technical requirements.

Furthermore, the CONACOM noted that the Conajzar did not justify its alleged favoritism. The former authority also slammed the regulator for providing no requirements on due diligence for its participants and for not checking applicants’ criminal records.

In addition, the APOJA, a Paraguayan gambling union, slammed the Conajzar for running a sports betting tender before Paraguay’s rules on sports betting are finalized.

The Saga Has Been Going on for Months

Despite the scrutiny, the Conajzar is firm on awarding the tender to DARUMA SAM, which it considers to be the most capable operator for a national franchise in the country. The authority noted that its decision has been approved by the government as attested by a decree signed by President Mario Abdo Benítez’s office.

In 2022, DARUMA SAM, the recipient of the national sports betting franchise license, was investigated by the Secretariat for the Prevention of Money Laundering, which accused the operator of allowing money laundering at its properties.

Earlier this year, foreign competitors tried to appeal Conajzar’s decision. Many were outraged by the unfair bidding process, involving the regulator in a prolonged legal battle.

Foreign companies claimed that DARUMA SAM had not presented the correct documentation and should have therefore been disqualified from the competition. A consortium of B-Gaming and Gambling SA also slammed the Conajzar for its reluctance to provide proper justification for its decisions.

Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) games began to slowly increase their visibility more than a decade ago. Since then, their popularity has been expanding and many sports fans and bettors found such games engaging and entertaining. Mostly favored in the United States, DFS games are also available in different jurisdictions around the globe including Europe and Latin America.

In light of the increase in popularity of such games, the gambling regulator in Germany, the Federal Authority known as Gluecksspiel (GGL), recently looked into DFS games. But what are DFS games? Such games enable the participants to form a team consisting of virtual players that are based on the stats of real players from different sports leagues.

Once a team is formed, then the participants play against each other and depending on the statistics of the players, an outcome is determined which can be either a win or a loss. This functionality, which resembles a “game of chance,” according to the regulator, needs to be regulated.

Protecting the Consumers Is Paramount

The effort, GGL explained, comes at a time when the regulator seeks to implement effective protection for online gamblers. The GGL classified some DFS games as “illegal gambling.” However, upon further consultation late last month, it allowed a limited number of DFS games to operate and classified them as gambling products under the Fourth Interstate Gambling Treaty (GlüNeuRSt) in the country.

Fighting illegal gambling is an important consumer protection issue and can only be effective if all other authorities involved, such as law enforcement agencies, pull together.

Benjamin Schwanke, CEO of GGL

GGL’s CEO, Benjamin Schwanke, explained that the fight against illegal gambling can be effective only if different law enforcement, authorities and regulators join forces. Still, he acknowledged that protecting consumers from illegal gambling is significantly important.

We find that our decisions are accepted by the providers and implemented promptly.

Ronald Benter, Board member of the GGL

Ronald Benter, GGL’s Board member, added that the Authority sees that providers adhere to GGL’s decisions and implement changes quickly. He pointed out that the changes related to DFS games ultimately seek to protect consumers from gambling-related addiction and illegal gambling. Benter reminded that a whitelist containing all regulated operators can be found via GGL’s website.
