In a bizarre incident at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, a 70-year-old man named Mitchell Graham was apprehended after an altercation over a casino slot machine allegedly resulted in a stabbing with a steak knife.

Graham Faces Legal Consequences After New Year’s Eve Incident

The incident took place on the morning of New Year’s Eve, with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police responding to a service call about a battery with a deadly weapon at the Orleans casino on Tropicana Avenue. Graham was taken into custody and is now facing charges of battery and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, reported Fox 5 Vegas.

According to court documents, Graham, who had been gambling at the casino, went to use the restroom after inserting money into a slot machine. Upon his return, he found another individual occupying the seat he had been using. 

Graham confronted the person, insisting he vacate the seat. The dispute escalated when the other man allegedly grabbed the cash voucher from the slot machine and attempted to walk away.

In response, Graham, claiming the money was rightfully his, displayed a 3-4 inch steak knife. The situation intensified, leading to the victim sustaining a superficial cut on his right rib cage. 

Witnesses reported Graham making a stabbing motion, while a female onlooker mentioned Graham’s threat to punch the victim if he did not leave the machine.

Graham was promptly arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, facing charges of battery with a deadly weapon. He is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on January 17.

Graham’s Defense Clashes with Victim’s Account in Casino Stabbing

Investigations revealed differing accounts of the incident. Graham contended that the other man turned into him, resulting in the stabbing, while the victim maintained he was playing a different slot machine, having added $20 to the 50 cents already present.

The victim, who suffered a superficial cut on his rib cage, expressed his upset, stating that he was stabbed for no apparent reason. The surveillance footage was reviewed by police, indicating Graham’s actions during the altercation.

A recent road accident has taken the lives of 15 people near Carberry, a small city located about 100 miles away from Winnipeg, the capital and the biggest city of the Canadian province of Manitoba. Rob Hill, the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s (RCMP) commanding officer, confirmed that an investigation into the crash has started and the first responders were dispatched to the crash, ABCNews reveals.

What’s known so far is that a total of 25 people were riding a bus that was heading on a trip to a casino. In the crash, the bus and a semi-trailer truck collided, resulting in the death of 15 people. On the other hand, 10 people who survived the devastating crash injured were taken to hospitals for further treatment.

“The news from Carberry, Manitoba is incredibly tragic. I’m sending my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones today, and I’m keeping the injured in my thoughts.“

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, deemed the news about the accident as heartbreaking. He sent his condolences to the family and friends of the people who died in the crash. Finally, Trudeau noted: “I cannot imagine the pain those affected are feeling – but Canadians are here for you.”

A Tragic Road Accident

According to RCMP Supt. Rob Lasson, “the drivers of both the bus and truck are alive and in hospital.” The people that died in the crash were mostly seniors from the Dauphin senior center. The bus left on Thursday morning and was reportedly heading to Sand Hills Casino located in Carberry.

“The public is reeling and asking a lot of questions and people are trying to determine if their loved ones were involved. Death on this scale is never normalized for us.“

Lasson said that what’s known so far is that the bus was driving south and near a crossing, it collided with a truck that was going east. Whether or not one of the drivers made a mistake and how exactly the accident happened is still subject to investigation.

Still, Lasson acknowledged that tragic accidents at such a scale are uncommon, which is why the public wants to know what caused the accident. Given that an investigation is ongoing, local authorities did not disclose the names of the deceased seniors in the crash.

Apart from using good old police work, the state’s authorities have been concerned with certain age groups being more susceptible to falling victim to such illegitimate gambling operations.

This is why the AARP Florida and Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) issued a joint statement on Monday trying another approach – raising awareness about such unlicensed casinos that operate illegally.

AARP Florida and Gaming Commission Warn about Illegal Casinos

These businesses have been very agile and quick, established overnight and oftentimes gone or shut down by the time authorities catch wind of events. The venues advertise their products as “arcades” but they house slot machines inside.

This is at odds with state laws that allow slot machines exclusively on the premises of tribal casinos for the time being. The AARP has cautioned that these venues are purposefully targeting the ageing adult population, as they are less likely to object or even understand that they are being the victims of a scam.

“These illicit gaming centers may appear innocuous at first glance, but they are breaking state law, as are operators and customers of these illegal establishments,” the regulator and the AARP have stated in a joint press release.

The release has also outlined some of the reasons why people should try and avoid these venues. For one, there is zero consumer protection at these so-called adult arcades, which means that there is no fair play and consumers may lose money or be scammed. The AARP has tried to also instruct consumers on what to look out for when in a facility that offers slots.

The Public Asked to Assist in Tackling These Businesses

For one, slot machines that aren’t on tribal land and their casinos are already illegal. Anything outside tribal land or Miami-Dade or Broward counties is illegal, and so is sports betting. Once again, the Florida Gaming Control Commission has urged caution and public awareness of the issue.

Authorities have relied on tips from citizens to ensure that they swoop in on such illegal venues and shut them down. However, to make sure that the process is efficient, the public is urged to alert the police or the commission itself. Meanwhile, the regulator has reaffirmed that it would pursue criminal charges against illegal gambling venues and their owners.
