From 1 January 2025, game suppliers must have a Danish Gambling Authority license to provide games to operators with a Danish license for betting and online casinos. Applications for these licenses will be accepted starting from 1 September 2024. The Danish Gambling Authority has made guidance material and new application forms available on their website.

Application Process and Required Documentation

On the “Game Suppliers” page under “For Businesses and Associations,” applicants can find detailed information about the application process. The available materials include:

• Guidance on Supplier Licence: This document provides comprehensive instructions on obtaining a licence.
• Application for Licence as a Game Supplier (Form 2-06): The main application form required to apply for the licence.
• Appendix A – Personal Statement (Form 2-02): This appendix requires personal details and declarations from the applicant.
• Appendix B-2 – Technical Conditions (Form 2-08): Outlines the technical requirements that must be met.
• Appendix C – Declaration from Representative (Form 2-04): A declaration form for representatives of the applying entity.

Certification Requirements

According to the Danish Gambling Authority’s certification program, Spillemyndigheden mandates that game suppliers’ games, platforms, business procedures, and systems be tested and inspected by an accredited testing company. This certification is necessary before any games can be supplied to licensed gambling operators.

A new version of the certification program is being developed to delineate the responsibilities of operators and game suppliers. This revised program is expected to be available for consultation by mid-July 2024 and will come into effect on 1 January 2025. Updated standard reports will also be released on this date.

Launch of the “Games Register”

In conjunction with introducing licenses for game suppliers, the Authority will launch a new portal for managing game certificates, known as the “Games Register.” This portal is set to be operational by 1 October 2024. Game supplier applicants will receive login details to upload their information and game certificates as part of the application process.

Transition Period and Compliance

Existing game certificates and certifications under the current program will remain valid, so there will be no need for re-certification if a game or game system has already been tested and inspected. However, starting on 1 July 2025, the new certification program will be mandatory. The Danish Gambling Authority recommends that game suppliers and operators adopt the updated program as soon as possible to ensure compliance.

The global gaming and entertainment company, MGM Resorts International, released its latest unaudited financial report, revealing details regarding its performance for the third quarter of 2023. The new report covers the three-month period ending September 30, 2023, revealing strong growth of consolidated net revenues. Overall, MGM Resorts posted consolidated net revenues of $4 billion. This result, when compared to the corresponding period in 2022, represented an increase of 16%.

The company explained that the strong growth was the result of the outstanding performance of MGM China in light of the lifted COVID restrictions in Macau. The strong performance of MGM China was able to partially offset the impact of the cyberattack against the company that disrupted its Las Vegas and regional operations. Additionally, MGM China’s performance helped cushion the impact of the dispositions of The Mirage, as well as Gold Strike Tunica.

In its trading update, the company revealed that net revenue for its Las Vegas Strip Resorts decreased by 8% to $2.1 billion. Regional operations for Q3 this year also marked a decrease with revenues down 5% to $925 million. In contrast, MGM China’s revenues for the latest trading period soared. According to the recent report, MGM China’s net revenues hit $813 million, up by a staggering 829% when compared to the $87 million result from Q3 in 2022.

The Company Enjoys Progress in Osaka

Besides the strong performance of MGM China, MGM Resorts reminded of its progress in the Asia region. In Q3 this year, the company was able to finalize the certification process in Japan by signing an Implementation Agreement for its integrated resort in Osaka. This marked a major step for the project in the region.

Further details within MGM’s recent report reveal that its operating income for Q3 this year hit $370 million. In contrast, for the same period in 2022, the company posted an operating loss of $1.0 billion. According to MGM, the positive result this year comes after an increase in its net revenues in combination with decreasing amortization expenses.

After the Cyberattack, MGM Is Stronger than Before

Jonathan Halkyard, MGM Resorts’ CFO and treasurer, revealed that the company continues to explore options for share repurchases as an “attractive opportunity” to return value to its shareholders. “Year-to-date, we have repurchased approximately $1.7 billion in stock. Our buyback program totals $6.2 billion since the beginning of 2021, reducing our share count by over 30%,” he explained.

Hornbuckle spoke about the solid performance of MGM China that helped offset the negative impact of the cybersecurity issue. Focusing on the future, he said that the company is looking forward to the upcoming F1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas and the debut of the MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy.

In Q3 2023, MGM posted a net income of $161 million, compared to a net loss of $577 million for the corresponding period last year. The recent trading update revealed that consolidated adjusted EBITDAR in Q3 this year was $1.1 billion.

Mississippi’s gambling regulator, the Mississippi Gaming Commission, published its sports wagering report for September 2023. The report highlights the performance of the state’s sportsbooks and shows which sports were the most popular among players.

In terms of sports betting handle, the Magnolia State’s sportsbooks managed to surpass the $50 billion mark, exceeding the results recorded in September 2022 when the local punters wagered $43,139,310. For reference, September 2023 saw Mississippians wager a total of $51,647,914 on sports. This figure translated into taxable revenue of $8,144,027 billion, which was lower than the revenue recorded in September 2022.

Coastal Mississippi contributed $33,494,794 of the total handle. Bettors in Central Mississippi, on the other hand, wagered $12,331,034. Northern Mississippi sports betting handle, meanwhile, lagged behind at $5,822,085.

Football Remained a Top Performer

The commission also published data about the most popular sports among bettors. According to the data provided by the commission, football remained the most popular sport in the state, although the total football handle experienced a decline in all areas but Central Mississippi. For reference, fans wagered a total of $5,935,048, $19,332,644 and $3,434,245 in Central, Coastal and Northern Mississippi, respectively.

Basketball was another strong contender, recording a handle of $166,396, $235,916 and $191,021 in Central, Coastal and Northern Mississippi, respectively.

Baseball fans in Central Mississippi wagered $1,291,297. Those in Coastal Mississippi bet $3,862,924 more. The baseball handle in Northern Mississippi lagged behind at $342,744.

Parlay cards remained a popular vertical, causing players in Central, Coastal and Northern Mississippi to bet $4,830,155, $5,359,855 and $1,542,319, respectively.

Other sports contributed $108,136, $4,703,453 and $311,754 in handle in Central, Coastal and Northern Mississippi, respectively.

In the meantime, the American Gaming Association published its Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker for August, reporting on the industry’s performance. Mississippi’s results for the period experienced a slight year-on-year decline of 3.7%.

The gambling regulator in Indiana, the Indiana Gaming Commission, released its latest report, revealing details regarding the performance of sports betting operators for the month of September. The recent report reveals that the betting handle posted by regulated betting operators last month hit $404.1 million, marking a year-over-year increase.

A comparison to the $382.5 million in betting handle posted a year earlier, in September 2022, shows that this year, the handle increased by nearly 6%. On the other hand, when compared to the $355.4 million betting handle result reported in September 2021, an increase of 13.7% is observed, reaffirming an ongoing growth trajectory.

Considering the $404.1 million in betting handle reported last month, taxable sports wagering adjusted gross revenue (AGR), halted at $41.1 million. A year-over-year comparison to the corresponding period last year shows that while the betting handle was lower, taxable AGR was higher. In September 2022, taxable AGR reported by regulated sports betting operators was higher by $10 million, a total of $51.2 million. Still, the taxable AGR reported last month surpassed the result from September 2021 which was $33.9 million.

According to the newly released report by the gambling regulator, sports betting tax last month was $3,972,181. This result, when compared to the $4.9 million in sports wagering tax reported for September 2022, also marked a decrease.

Considering the start of the new NFL season last month, it’s no surprise that football posted the highest betting handle, $155.4 million. Parlay bets were also strong in September with $124.8 million in betting handle, while other sports saw $62.9 million in betting handle.

Highest Betting Handle Posted by DraftKings While FanDuel Follows Closely

DraftKings, the leading online betting operator, along with its retail partner in Indiana, Ameristar Casino, posted the highest betting handle last month, a total of $171.2 million. This resulted in $15.6 million in taxable AGR for September, bringing in nearly $1.5 million in tax revenue.

Second in line was Blue Chip Casino and its online betting partner FanDuel. Overall, the duo reported a betting handle of $124.8 million last month, the second-highest result out of all operators in the state. The taxable AGR posted by Blue Chip Casino and FanDuel last month was $15.1 million, bringing in $1.5 million in taxes.

The Commission’s latest report reveals that Belterra Casino posted the third-highest betting handle result in September, hitting $33.7 million. This resulted in $3.8 million in taxable AGR and $357,194 in taxes.

Kansas is one of the latest states to launch legal sports betting, expanding the industry’s presence across the United States. A year later, the Sunflower State’s wagering industry continues to grow, as shown by the increased interest in the vertical.

The continued growth of sports betting resulted in a monthly handle of $219.3 million in September. This figure is notably 36.6% higher than the one recorded during the sports betting market’s opening month, September 2022. For reference, that month saw the state’s sportsbooks collect $160.5 million in bets.

September’s results also signify the recovery of the local market, following the subpar August results. In August, Kansas’ sports betting operators recorded a handle of $94.4 million, 132.3% lower than September 2023’s results.

This rebound is to be expected, of course, considering the return of the NFL and the multiple new wagering opportunities awaiting players.

Kansas Exceeded Its Previous Record

The record-breaking September 2023 results also exceeded the ones recorded in March this year when the state’s sports punters wagered a total of $206.3 million.

September’s handle of $219.3 million translated into revenue of $8.1 million, far exceeding the results recorded in August 2023 and September 2022 when the industry recorded revenues of $1.3 million and $4.8 million, respectively.

Taking a closer look at the September 2023 figures makes it clear that betting online continues to be Kansans’ preferred way to wager. For reference, an overwhelming $201.1 million of the total bets were placed online. Only $18.2 million of the total wagers were placed with traditional sportsbooks.

Reflecting the Kansans sports betting enthusiasts’ preference for online wagering, the online vertical accounted for $7.6 million of the monthly revenue in the state. Retail sportsbooks, meanwhile, reported revenue of $459,336.

DraftKings continues to be the preferred online sportsbook of local bettors. The American sports betting giant and its local partner, Boot Hill Casino, accounted for $97.2 million of the handle and $3.3 million of the revenue. FanDuel and BetMGM followed next with revenues of $3 million and $814,000 respectively.

Earlier this month, Matt Schwartz, Kansas Lottery’s finance director, said that the industry has so far seen Kansan bettors wager $1.85 billion, contributing $7 million to state revenue.

June, on the other hand, was a record-low month for the Sunflower State, because of a variety of setbacks.

The NSW government has confirmed that the proposed ban is going to be complied with fully, and already nearly 50% of all establishments have decided to act preemptively and strip their outward gambling signage.

NSW Sees Proposed Gambling Signage Ban Preparations Take Off

The measure discussed is a voted proposal by the government which wants gambling businesses to remove signage that invites passers-by to visit their VIP Room, VIP Lounge, Golden Room, Players’ Lounge, and other similar dedicated gambling spaces, which boil down to gambling business operations.

The government has similarly acted preemptively and anticipated some companies using imagery and signage such as dragons, coins, or lightning to attract people, but this type of outward branding and marking one’s establishment has also been prohibited under the new rules. Officials from the NSW government provided an update last week, confirming that 215 out of 530 venues have moved on with complying with the measure.

Minister for Gaming & Racing David Harris has hailed the efforts made by these establishments and said that they went on to indicate that operators and the government can indeed collaborate in helping reduce gambling harm and making sure that consumers are protected across the board.

“We announced these changes back in May as a staged approach to ensure pubs and clubs were given the appropriate amount of time to conceal, remove and switch off any gambling-promoting signage,” Davis added. However, this measure is just one of the planned proposals that will help elevate the responsible gambling field in Australia and New South Wales in particular.

A Raft of Measures to Protect Consumers and Tackle Crime

There are further measures designed to ensure that Australians and NSW residents are protected. One of the most ambitious measures is to reduce the cash input limit for electronic gaming machines from $5,000 presently to $500.

Another measure is to ban clubs that offer gambling materials from being able to place political donations of any sort, and there will also be Responsible Gaming Officers now available at any venue that features more than 20 machines. NSW is also focusing on a cashless tech that is supposed to curb money laundering and boost player protection.
