The Danish regulator, Spillemyndigheden, announced that it has resolved a self-exclusion issue that affected over a thousand people. The regulator also identified an error in Denmark’s “No thanks to gambling advertisements” scheme. Both issues have since been corrected and reported to the Danish Data Protection Agency.

For reference, the initial error saw self-excluded players able to access certain games. According to Spillemyndigheden, the issue affected people who had just renewed their ROFUS self-exclusion. The authority explained that the renewal maintained the original exclusion but failed to cover games that were newly added to the exclusion scheme.

A total of 1,200 players were affected by this issue, Spillemyndigheden reported. The regulator emphasized that this issue has since been fixed and that the affected players are now excluded from gambling.

In the meantime, Spillemyndigheden identified an error in “No thanks to gambling advertisements,” which was also promptly fixed. The Danish watchdog also ensured that these errors will no longer happen to future registrants.

Spillemyndigheden Regrets the Error

Spillemyndigheden reported the case to the Danish Data Protection Agency as a data breach. The regulator emphasized its desire to protect the Danish players and provide them with reliable self-exclusion.

The Danish watchdog explained that it makes a great effort to ensure that ROFUS is a stable and reliable service that its players can trust. Because of that, the regulator said that the aforementioned error was “very regrettable.”

All affected people are set to receive a direct message. Players who still have any questions should contact Spillemyndigheden.

The Authority Asked Operators to Weigh in on AML System

In January, the regulator worked on enhancing Denmark’s new anti-money laundering system, GoAML. The solution, operated by the Money Laundering Secretariat, has been designed to identify and flag instances of potential money laundering or terrorism financing.

Spillemyndigheden invited gambling operators to weigh in on the system and suggest new money laundering indicators. According to the authority, the current system fails to properly reflect the complexities of the gambling sector, which is why changes are needed.

Denmark’s gambling regulator, the Spillemyndigheden, has asked the gambling industry to weigh in on the country’s new AML system. Operated by the Money Laundering Secretariat, the GoAML solution flags potential instances of money laundering and terrorism financing.

GoAML keeps track of AML reports in the country, providing the Money Laundering Secretariat with important information that allows it to launch further investigations into the matter. The system’s goal is to help Danish authorities crack down on money laundering and terrorism financing and keep the Danish market healthy.

However, the Spillemyndigheden pointed out that gambling operators can select only one indicator when submitting an entry, which is “money laundering through gambling.” The regulator believes that more options should be available, reflecting the inherent complexities of the gambling ecosystem.

As a result, the Spillemyndigheden discussed the matter with the Money Laundering Secretariat, asking it to add more options. The latter body agreed to that, prompting an inquiry into the indicators operators wish to be added.

Spillemyndigheden Will Forward the Suggestions to the Secretariat

The Spillemyndigheden asked the gambling industry about its opinions on the matter. Companies can provide their own suggestions for GoAML indicators to the Spillemyndigheden, allowing it to then communicate them to the Money Laundering Secretariat.

Companies that wish to provide their suggestions should send them to the Spillemyndigheden ([email protected]) by February 5, specifying “input for indicators” in the email’s subject field. Following the conclusion of the period, the gambling authority will send the suggestions to the Money Laundering Secretariat.

In other news, the Spillemyndigheden recently unveiled a new informational website that provides local consumers with information about gambling and gambling harm. The site, StyrPåSpillet.dk, will serve as the official public portal for the country’s gambling industry, allowing consumers in the country to familiarize themselves with the sector and its risks.

The local regulator remains bullish on educating the customers protecting the Danish market from fraud. To that end, the Spillemyndigheden blocked a whipping 49 illegal gambling websites last year. The authority is planning to block illegal operators at least two times a year now.

The Spillemyndigheden, Denmark’s gambling regulator, has published data about its StopSpillet helpline. The helpline was launched in 2019 and has so far received thousands of people with gambling problems.

Since launching, StopSpillet has received almost 2,500 inquiries via phone and chat, helping many problem players receive the help they need. The helpline is designed to help struggling players, their relatives or professionals get the advice they need to tackle gambling harm. People living in the country should contact the helpline if they feel that they are gambling too much or that a relative is becoming a problem player.

In 2022, the Spillemyndigheden continued to promote its StopSpillet helpline, advertised its solutions via TV and social media campaigns and spread awareness of it via bus stop and train station advertising.

In addition, 2022 saw the regulator launch major campaigns amid popular sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup tournament and Tour de France.

Important StopSpillet Statistics

The Spillemyndigheden posted statistics about the people who contacted the StopSpillet, remarking on certain curious findings. Most notably, it turns out that most of the people who contacted the helpline had begun wagering young.

According to data published by the regulator, 88% of the problem players who sought StopSpillet’s help, had placed their first bet when they hadn’t even turned 25. Even more concerningly, it turns out that a whopping 50% of bettors had started gambling before they were even 18.

This shows that many have placed their wager illegally, sparking concerns about the integrity of the Danish gaming market.

The authority also published statistics about the people who contacted the authority on behalf of another person. Half of those people, the regulator informed, were the parents of a problem gambler. Seventeen percent contacted the helpline because of a partner with addictive tendencies, while nine percent of the calls came from a problem player’s siblings. Seven percent of the people who sought StopSpillet because of someone else were friends of the gambler and seventeen percent were the player’s children or other relatives or acquaintances.

Meanwhile, a new Danish Gambling Committee launched a probe into problem gambling, seeking to make the market safer for high-risk customers.

In other news, Denmark just concluded the consultation period for its player ID inspection standards. This came in the wake of the introduction of an order requiring Danish casinos to register all players before allowing them to play.
