The visitor won the Super 4 Progressive Jackpot – a prize offered to customers who place an additional $5 side bet on blackjack at the property. The side bet in question is offered on all blackjack tables at Mohegan Sun and is triggered when the dealer’s hand is a blackjack.

The size of the prize depends on the value and suit of the cards in the player and dealer’s hands.

The jackpot, Mohegan announced, was won on a blackjack table located in Casino of the Earth, which sports some 180,000 square feet of gaming and entertainment space. Casino of the Earth boasts 1,900 slot machines, 200+ table games and the Hall of the Lost Tribes, a special room with almost 400 slots and a poker room.

Overall, the Mohegan Sun property boasts more than 300,000 square feet of gaming space, approximately 4,000 slots and over 300 gaming tables.

This is not the only jackpot the Mohegan Sun property has handed in recent times. Soon after launching the Hold & Spin Slot Zone in Casino of the Sky, Mohegan handed a $100,000 jackpot to a visitor. A baccarat dealer at Mohegan Sun, Yu Wen Fu, 64, faces charges of manipulating games, resulting in a $124,000 loss for the casino.

Dealer Accused of Prearranging Cards, Resulting in Massive Casino Losses

Tribal police discovered Fu’s alleged malpractice on April 21, 2023, after a pit manager observed him handling cards suspiciously. Surveillance cameras captured Fu setting up the deck before a specific player, Haoen Jiang, approached, reported Connecticut media outlet The Day.

Rather than adhering to the standard procedure of washing cards on the table, Fu arranged them in a specific order, allowing him to deal with prearranged cards when Jiang played. Police investigation revealed a pattern of collusion between Fu and Jiang, with the casino’s losses totaling $124,260 between March 29 and April 20, 2023.

In the game of baccarat, where players bet on the outcome of the dealer or player’s hand reaching closest to nine, Fu allegedly signaled the appearance of the nine by strategically placing face cards in the deck. Surveillance footage tracked the chips paid out on each hand, determining the extent of the winnings.

Upon questioning, Jiang denied collaboration with Fu but had Fu’s cell phone number on his device. Jiang claimed their last conversation was about concert tickets and was subsequently ejected from the casino, facing no charges.

Fu, suspended pending investigation, maintained his innocence, asserting that cards accidentally turned face up during the wash, and he merely fixed them without rearranging them for personal gain. 

Arrested on November 15, Fu faces charges of first-degree larceny, second-degree larceny (four counts), and third-degree larceny. Released on a $25,000 bond, Fu was arraigned in New London’s Part A court on January 8 for serious crimes.

Sales & Delivery Center Opens at Mohegan Sun Casino Complex

The Tesla Sales & Delivery Center at Mohegan Sun will be situated within the casino complex, providing customers with the unique experience of test-driving vehicles around the resort. Additionally, Tesla plans to showcase its solar and storage products at the location, making it a comprehensive showcase of the company’s offerings for interested customers.

This decision marks Tesla’s second foray into tribal territories, as it was previously reported that the company planned to open another showroom on the lands of the Oneida Indian Nation in upstate New York by 2025, reported Associated Press.

The move to tribal lands comes as Tesla faces staunch opposition from traditional car dealerships and state lawmakers who have blocked the company’s attempts to obtain dealership licenses and establish direct-to-consumer sales in several states.

Hayden Reynolds, chairperson of the Connecticut Automotive Retail Association, emphasized the importance of maintaining a level playing field for all car dealerships in the state. The premium casino resort destination expanded its senior-level team by hiring the advertising and marketing industry expert David Fausel to the role of director of advertising.

Becoming a part of the company’s C-suite, Fausel will be in charge of its strategy. At the same time, the marketing industry expert will leverage his experience and provide strategic guidance within the advertising of Mohegan Sun.

As a director of advertising, Fausel will play a pivotal role in the company’s relations with different ad agencies such as TAXI, Media Storm, as well as Mintz + Hoke. In his new role, he will also oversee and provide vital support for “All in for Mohegan,” the company’s latest ad campaign.

Sun International, the South African operator of about a dozen casino properties including Sun City, has released its full-year results for 2022. The company’s online gaming operation, SunBet is reporting record-high revenues, and land operations including its slot distributor, Sun Slots are also showing strong revenue growth.

In the year that ended December 31, Sun International enjoyed a 10-fold increase in adjusted top earnings from R110m ($5,999,081) to R1.1bn ($59,990,810). EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) nearly doubled to R3.3bn.

Online Income up 36%

Anthony Leeming, Sun International Chief Executive said: “We are particularly pleased by the significant progress we are making with our online strategy, with SunBet showing strong growth in all key indicators. Gaming income from casinos, Sun Slots, and SunBet showed a significant recovery, with income up 36%.”

Sun Slots currently owns and operates six Limited Payout Machine (LPM) Route Operators across 4 provinces within South Africa – Grand Gaming Slots runs in Gauteng and Mpumalanga; Hot Slots in Gauteng, and Kingdomslots and KZN Slots KwaZulu-Natal, as well as Grandslots.

The company brought over 5,000 LPMs back into operation last year adding over 500 more machines than it had activated in 2021.

The CEO added that SunSlots intends to add another 1,000 machines to its network.

Leeming stated: “We continue to engage with the regulators to increase the rollout of LPMs to the 6,500 LPM positions that have been allocated,” according to various reports.

The wholly-owned subsidiary’s income increased about 20% over the previous year while its online operation, SunBet saw income surge more than 85% for the year with outsized growth in the second half of 2022.

“Active players on our rapidly expanding online sports betting and gaming platform continued to grow, with additional games being offered and the overall player experience being enhanced,” a statement said.

While online gambling is understood by most to not be legal in South Africa, that is simply not the case. Online betting and games where players bet on outcomes, such as roulette, are allowed.

Successes of Sun City Operator Continue Upward Trajectory

On this day last year, SunBet reported 2021 turnover was up 78% over 2020 and 66% over 2019, while gaming income rose 33% against 2020 and 30% against 2019. Last year’s commentary on the numbers with explanations of the online sector of iGaming and sports betting showed healthy growth driven by increased broadband, smartphone, and mobile money penetration, with SunBet fervently scaling up revenues from middling to high-end customers.

The group expanded into new markets last year with a 70 percent investment of $3.2m (R58m) in SunBet Africa Holdings.

Leeming said: “The company has online sports betting and casino licenses to operate in Ghana, Zambia, and Kenya. We are in the early stages of rolling out the SunBet operating model and brand in these markets, which have attractive long-term growth potential.

“Our resort and hotel properties have continued to perform exceptionally well, and we anticipate another good year from them in 2023.”
