Ontario has 53 licensed gaming platform operators, each vying for a share of the lucrative CA$2.4 billion (US$1.7 billion) market, as reported by iGaming Ontario’s revenue figures for this fiscal year.

In a recent analysis, EKG predicted that a fully regulated Canadian market, excluding gray market participants, could reach a value of $9.2 billion, with icasino expected to dominate. Consequently, operators in this market are under constant pressure to innovate and enhance their offerings.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board’s website has been offline for several days due to a cyberattack. 

Nevada Gaming Control Board Implements Temporary Measures after Cyberattack

Reports indicate that the cyberattack targeted the public-facing websites of both the Nevada Gaming Control Board and the Nevada Gaming Commission, the bodies responsible for regulating the state’s gaming industry. 

The affected website contained various essential information such as agency meeting agendas, gaming regulations, press releases, public statistics, contact details, and biographies of board and commission members.

Fortunately, gaming license details and financial records were stored on a separate internal state agency system, ensuring their protection from the cyberattack. 

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released a statement via its social media channels, confirming the incident and outlining the steps taken to mitigate the damage. According to the statement, immediate measures were initiated to safeguard the website by taking it offline. 

The board is currently collaborating with cybersecurity experts to thoroughly assess the situation. In the meantime, preparations are underway to publish a temporary website for individuals seeking access to information.

Nevada Gaming Control Board Takes Steps Against Cyber Threats

It is worth noting that the cyberattack seems to have exclusively targeted the gaming control board’s website, with no reported impact on other state agencies, which continue to operate normally. Even the monthly meeting of the Nevada Gaming Commission proceeded as scheduled, with no mention of the incident.

This cyberattack follows closely on the heels of high-profile attacks on major casino operators in Nevada, including MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment, last September. These attacks resulted in significant financial losses and reputational damage to the affected companies.

In Nevada District Court, customers of Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International even initiated five class-action lawsuits. These suits allege that the casino companies neglected to safeguard crucial customer data during the cyberattacks, contrary to Federal Trade Commission guidelines. 

Last June, Nevada lawmakers approved funds for upgrading the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s information technology system, a move aimed at replacing the outdated system from the 1980s. This system, separate from the website, plays a crucial role in running board functions. The upgrade was deemed necessary to ensure the security and efficiency of the board’s operations in the face of evolving cyber threats.

As inquiries into the recent cyberattack progress, stakeholders express optimism that actions will be implemented to strengthen the cybersecurity framework, thereby protecting against potential disruptions to essential state operations in the future.

Denmark’s gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has launched a new informational website that provides local consumers with information about gambling and gambling harm. The new site’s goal is to provide local players with sufficient educational materials about the sector and its risks.

Called StyrPåSpillet.dk, the new site will be Denmark’s official public informational portal for information about the country’s gambling industry. It will cover materials about the various gambling sectors, including brick-and-mortar casinos, lottery operators and iGaming companies.

In addition to updating Danish consumers about the latest developments in Danish gambling, StyrPåSpillet.dk will have a section dedicated to parents and educators. This section will include a variety of educational materials about addictive behavior, how to spot it and how to prevent kids and young people from harm.

The available educational materials, the Spillemyndigheden elaborated, are primarily focused on students aged 13 to 15.

In addition to all that, the new informational website will also host a special podcast dubbed “Vi snakker om spillet,” which translates to “We talk about the game.” As suggested by its title, the podcast will see experts talk about the gambling sector, providing audiences with insights into the experiences of former and recovering addicts.

StyrPåSpillet.dk is already live, allowing Danish consumers to learn more about the country’s gambling industry.

Denmark Seeks to Reduce Problem Gambling

In October, the Spillemyndigheden confirmed that the country’s self-exclusion system, ROFUS, will now cover land-based casinos and betting shops across the country. Efforts toward responsible gambling over the last few years across North America have expanded. Amid the growing popularity of online gambling and sports betting, a need is observed in education on the risks of gambling and the promotion of responsible gambling tools such as deposit limits or spending limits, among other methods that seek to reduce at-risk or problem gambling.

Recently, one of Canada’s thirteen provinces, Prince Edward Island (PEI), launched a new website that underlines its commitment to responsible gambling. The website of the PEI Department of Health and Wellness offers support for people suffering from problem gambling or at-risk gambling, providing information along with a toll-free line for anyone who wishes to speak to a professional.

The website reveals that there are nearly 10 signs that people can identify they are suffering from a gambling addiction. Notably, two signs stand out as the most important and apply to people who cannot control how much money or time they spend on gambling. On the other hand, people who continuously engage in gambling activities knowing that they lose money or cause harm to their families may also be suffering from problem gambling, according to the website.

Website Needs to Offer More Resources, Information

While the new website of the Department of Health and Wellness reaffirms PEI’s commitment toward responsible gambling, an expert on gambling addiction said that more needs to be done. As announced by CBC News, Elizabeth Stephen, a Halifax-based counseling therapist who specializes in providing support to people affected by problem gambling, the website is a “missed opportunity” for the province. She criticized the information shared via the new website, claiming that more resources need to be available for individuals from the province who seek help due to a gambling-related issue.

According to Stephen, the successful reduction of problem gambling would also mean reducing the profits from the activity. She was baffled by the links the new website offered to Atlantic Lotto, outlining that businesses or organizations that benefit from gambling activities should not be referenced via a website that seeks to reduce gambling harm. Stephen explained: “It’s a hard choice, you know, to reduce harm. It means that the profit’s going to be reduced.”

The Canadian Center on Substance Use and Addiction recently outlined its Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines, describing in detail how individuals can reduce their expenses related to gambling. While those guidelines clearly reveal what percentage of their income can different individuals spend on gambling monthly depending on their annual income, this is not the case for the new PEI website, warned Stephen.

Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has announced updates to its self-exclusion website, CRUKS, to make it easier for consumers to temporarily exclude themselves from real money gambling.

The upgrades to CRUKS, the Central Register for the Exclusion of Games of Chance, now make it easier for users to set up a gambling exclusion period for a minimum of six months. In addition, the exclusion period can be applied to both land-based properties and online brands and can be for a longer period than half a year.

The new version of the Dutch gambling self-exclusion registry now allows players to unsubscribe after six months and includes an eight-day reflection period to prevent impulsive decisions. Additionally, the term “play break” has been replaced with “gambling stop” to provide clearer implications of self-exclusion.

All licensed Dutch gambling operators have been informed by KSA that they must ensure that their player databases are connected to CRUKS and must regularly confirm that their customers, both old and new, have not requested self-exclusion from gambling. Since its launch in the country on October 1, 2021, CRUKS has received more than 38,000 self-exclusion requests.

Meanwhile, KSA said last week that starting July 1, Dutch operators must comply with more strict advertising policies that prohibit TV commercials and public space marketing. KSA will directly inspect marketing campaigns, and bookmakers can only advertise online and through social media if at least 95% of the advertising content is aimed at audiences aged 24 and above.

In addition, consumers must be given the choice to opt out of seeing these advertisements if they wish not to see them.
