IGT-Celebrates-2500-Installations-in-Spains-AWP-SectorInternational Game Technology (IGT) has recently reached an important milestone in Spain’s Amusement with Prize (AWP) sector, achieving over 2,500 units of its Tombola bingo product installed. This celebration was marked by a special customer event in Valladolid, Spain, at the prestigious Retuerta LeDomaine Hotel, in collaboration with Orenes Grupo. IGT used this opportunity to present its innovative Salones Espana multi-level progressive (MLP) portfolio, featuring top-performing games like Diamond Mania and Treasure Box Link on the BINTIA 27 cabinet.

The event was a showcase of IGT’s growth and commitment to providing localized, market-specific solutions. Marilu Aldana, IGT’s Director of Sales for Western Europe and Africa, emphasized that this achievement was not just a numerical one but a reflection of the company’s ongoing dedication to meeting the preferences of Spanish players with tailor-made experiences. IGT’s continued success in the AWP space is underpinned by its ability to leverage its advanced technology and in-depth understanding of the Spanish gaming market. This milestone further cements IGT’s position as a major player in Spain’s regulated gambling sector, which is known for its dynamic and competitive nature.

Spain’s Online Gambling Revenue Hits €398.1 Million in Q1 2025

Spain’s online gambling sector continues to show resilience, with gross gaming revenue (GGR) reaching €398.1 million in the first quarter of 2025. This figure represents a 2.68% dip compared to the previous quarter, but the year-on-year growth of 13.7% highlights the ongoing upward trajectory of the market. The report, released by Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), shows that casino games remain the top performer, accounting for over half of the total GGR. A significant driver of this growth was the surge in slot machine activity, which saw a remarkable increase of 42.06%.

The DGOJ also highlighted the notable increase in player engagement, with deposits rising by 23.85% compared to Q1 2024 and withdrawals climbing 29.38%. These trends reflect a more active and engaged player base, indicating a thriving online gambling market despite the slight quarterly dip in revenue. The increased marketing spend of €164.86 million, representing a 43.97% rise from the previous year, further indicates that operators are investing heavily in customer acquisition and retention.

Impact of Spain’s Gambling Advertising Restrictions on New Account Sign-ups

Spain’s gambling advertising restrictions, introduced under the Royal Decree 958/2020, have significantly impacted the country’s online gambling industry. A recent study revealed that new online account registrations fell by 55% in 2023, dropping to 1.35 million from 3.01 million in 2020, just before the advertising restrictions came into effect. These measures, which limit advertising to a narrow window of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., prohibit celebrity endorsements, and ban sponsorship deals, have created a challenging environment for operators trying to attract new players.

While these regulatory changes aim to reduce gambling-related harm, they have also led to a significant reduction in marketing and bonusing expenditures. The total amount spent on gambling advertising dropped from €193.7 million in 2020 to €116.5 million in 2022, and bonuses fell from €189.5 million in 2020 to €165.9 million in 2023. Sponsorship spending saw the most dramatic decrease, reflecting the challenge operators face in engaging with potential customers.

Despite the decline in new registrations, the study found that the total amount bet and player deposits have continued to increase, indicating that while fewer new players are entering the market, existing players are continuing to engage with the platforms. The research also pointed out that active accounts remained relatively stable, showing that the impact of the advertising restrictions may not be as severe as initially expected. The findings suggest that Spain’s regulatory measures have succeeded in curbing the initiation of new gambling behaviors without stifling the existing player base.
