Eight-High-Profile-Online-Sports-Betting-Platforms-Registered-In-AlbertaAlberta is set to officially launch its regulated online gambling market on July 13, 2026, becoming the second Canadian province to open up this sector following Ontario‘s 2022 launch. As the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) prepares for the opening, a number of prominent operators have already secured their licenses to operate in the market. These include heavyweights like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, BetRivers, BallyBet, PointsBet-Canada, and theScore Bet, all of which are expected to dominate Alberta’s online gambling scene.

A Competitive Market Emerges

The entry of these established operators signals a highly competitive environment for Alberta’s online gambling market, which will now provide regulated sports betting and online casino options to players. Although the province’s population is about a third of Ontario’s, Alberta is home to major cities such as Calgary and Edmonton, which continue to grow rapidly. The timing of the launch, aligned with the final week of the World Cup and the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) mid-season, has added an extra level of excitement, particularly for sports betting enthusiasts.

Alberta’s CFL teams, like the Calgary Stampeders, will also offer bettors a chance to wager on local sporting events, starting with a key match against the Montreal Alouettes on July 18. The market will undoubtedly benefit from the widespread interest in major international events like the World Cup Final scheduled for July 19, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Revenue and Growth Expectations

The Alberta government has set ambitious goals for the market, forecasting an estimated CAD $100 million in annual tax revenue once the market is fully operational. With a 22% tax rate on operators’ gross gaming revenues, the province expects to generate a substantial financial return. However, this figure is smaller compared to Ontario, where the market generated $807 million in tax revenue for 2025.

Despite the smaller market size, Alberta’s 2.8 million population and its thriving urban centers like Calgary and Edmonton present a promising base for continued growth. Alberta’s government has also pointed to PlayAlberta, the province’s state-run online gambling platform, which has already generated $275 million in revenue for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, as evidence of the potential demand for regulated gambling.

Growing List of Registered Operators

As of May 2026, 28 operators have officially registered with the AGLC, but experts expect the number to rise as the July 13 launch date draws closer. The inclusion of bet365 and potentially other major brands is likely, given that these operators have expressed strong interest in entering Alberta’s regulated market.

The initial eight operators are the standout names in the industry, with each bringing unique offerings to the table. These include sports betting platforms with extensive global reach and powerful mobile apps for convenience. This competition is expected to drive innovation, offering Alberta players a wide variety of sports betting and casino options, including slots, live dealer games, and other exciting entertainment.

While 28 operators may seem a relatively small number when compared to Ontario’s 45-plus operators, it is still early days for Alberta’s online gambling market. Many operators are in the process of finalizing their registration, and new applications are likely to be submitted in the coming months.

Impact on the Provincial Economy

Alberta’s population growth, especially in its major cities, is expected to drive significant revenue generation from the new regulated market. The province’s commitment to a legal, regulated gambling sector comes with stringent controls, ensuring consumer protection and responsible gambling practices. Alberta’s government is betting that the market will thrive, citing its potential to help fund public initiatives through gaming revenue taxes.

Looking Ahead

As the market matures, Alberta’s AGLC has shown interest in transitioning operators from the gray market into the regulated environment. This means even more platforms could be on the horizon, further diversifying the types of gambling opportunities available to Albertans.

Given the combination of major operators, diverse betting options, and an exciting launch date tied to global sporting events, Alberta’s move into the regulated online gambling space is shaping up to be a significant event in the Canadian iGaming industry.
